Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time your safety analysis forced a design change that the design engineer did not want.

What they are checking: Whether they hold their ground as the hardware safety authority with good reasoning.

Tell me about a technical report you wrote that others relied on. How did you keep it clear?

What they are checking: Whether they can document safety work clearly enough to support audits and decisions.

How do you stay current with functional safety standards and lessons learned?

What they are checking: Whether they keep their safety knowledge sharp in a field that keeps changing.

What would you do

A peer review finds a gap in your FMEA right before a milestone. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they put safety completeness ahead of schedule pressure and report gaps honestly.

About the work

Walk me through a quantified fault tree analysis you built for hardware. What did the numbers tell you?

What they are checking: Whether they have actually done quantitative safety analysis and can interpret the results.

How do you calculate and improve hardware metrics like SPFM and LFM for a BMS circuit?

What they are checking: Whether they know ISO 26262 hardware architectural metrics and how design changes affect them.

What is a common-cause failure in a battery management system, and how would you guard against it?

What they are checking: Whether they understand dependent failures that can defeat redundancy.

How do you write a hardware safety requirement that a test engineer can actually verify?

What they are checking: Whether their requirements are specific and testable, not vague statements of intent.

Why is the BMS so critical to lithium-ion battery safety, and what failures worry you most?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the real hazards like overcharge, thermal runaway and sensing faults.

How do you build the functional safety parts of a DVP&R?
