Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about bringing up a new board for the first time. What do you check, and in what order?

What they are checking: Whether they have a careful bring-up process that protects hardware and finds problems quickly.

How do you work with firmware engineers when defining pin assignments and hardware interfaces?

What they are checking: Whether they collaborate early on the hardware and firmware boundary to avoid later rework.

Tell me about a design trade-off between cost and performance you had to make. How did you decide?

What they are checking: Whether they can make sound trade-offs for high-volume consumer and professional products.

How do you keep up with new parts and tools in embedded hardware?

What they are checking: Whether they stay curious and current, which matters on a team pushing new electronics capabilities.

What would you do

A communication bus like I2C or SPI is failing intermittently on your board. How would you debug it?

What they are checking: Whether they use scopes and logic analyzers to look at signal integrity and timing.

The board works at room temperature but fails at cold. What would you suspect first?

What they are checking: Whether they know temperature effects on parts like oscillators, capacitors and batteries.

About the work

Walk me through an embedded board you designed around a microcontroller. How did you choose the MCU?

What they are checking: Whether they can match a microcontroller's peripherals, memory and cost to what the product needs.

How do you design a clean power supply for a microcontroller running off a battery pack with a noisy motor on the same board?

What they are checking: Whether they understand regulation, filtering and layout that protect sensitive circuits from motor noise.

How do you protect inputs like triggers and battery terminals from ESD and transients on a jobsite tool?

What they are checking: Whether they design for harsh real-world conditions and know protection components.

What do you consider when adding a wireless radio, like Bluetooth, to a tool's board?

What they are checking: Whether they understand antenna placement, coexistence and certification for connected products.

How do you design a board so it can be tested and programmed easily on the production line?

What they are checking: Whether they think about test points, programming access and manufacturing test early.
