Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a strategic plan you built that spanned multiple business units or geographies. How did you get buy-in from leaders who had competing priorities?

whether the candidate can drive alignment across a matrixed organization, not just produce a good deck

Tell me about a time you identified a growth opportunity that others in the organization hadn't seen. What was your process and how did it turn out?

independent strategic thinking and whether their ideas actually created measurable value

Describe a due diligence process you were part of. What went wrong or got harder than expected, and how did you handle it?

real hands-on M&A experience versus surface familiarity with the term

Tell me about a time a senior executive pushed back hard on a recommendation you made. What did you do?

executive presence and whether they can hold their ground with data instead of caving or getting defensive

Tell me about a change or transformation initiative you led that met real resistance. How did you push it through?

track record of actually delivering change, not just planning it

Tell me about a project where you had to work across strategic marketing, HR, and finance at the same time. How did you keep it all moving without dropping the ball on any one function?

ability to manage the cross-functional breadth this role actually demands

Technical

How would you assess the competitive landscape for marine propulsion given the trends in electrification and changing customer demographics?

whether they can do genuine market and competitor analysis specific to this industry, not generic frameworks

Walk me through how you'd translate a large, messy dataset into three recommendations a CFO would act on.

analytical rigor and the ability to compress complexity into decision-ready insight

What financial metrics would you look at first to judge whether a product line is actually contributing to profitable growth versus just revenue growth?

depth of P&L and business acumen versus reciting buzzwords

How do you decide which strategic options are worth a deep analysis versus which ones you kill early?

prioritization discipline and whether they waste analytical horsepower on low-value questions

Situational

Say you're asked to evaluate whether Mercury should pursue an acquisition versus building a capability organically. How do you structure that analysis?

command of build-versus-buy frameworks and rigor in evaluating M&A alternatives

A regional leader and a product category leader disagree on where to prioritize investment dollars for next year. How do you get them to a resolution?

influence and conflict management without formal authority over either party

If you had to run point on Mercury's annual strategic planning process starting in your first quarter here, what would you want to learn in the first thirty days before touching the plan itself?

judgment about sequencing and humility about learning the business before pushing a strategy
