Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through your portfolio and pick one project where you took a surface from a sketch or clay model all the way to Class-A data. What were the trickiest transitions to get right?

whether they have real end-to-end experience turning design intent into production-ready surfaces, not just polished renders

Tell me about a time engineering came back with a packaging or tooling constraint that broke a surface you'd already refined. What did you do?

resilience and process discipline when aesthetic work collides with manufacturing reality

Describe a project where you were exploring conceptual surfaces with very loose constraints. How did you stay fast and iterative without producing sloppy geometry?

whether they can work loosely in early phases without losing surfacing fundamentals

Tell me about a design review where your surface got pushed back hard by engineering or a program milestone gate. How did you respond in the room?

composure and communication skill in cross-functional review settings, not just CAD ability

How do you stay current on new surfacing techniques or Alias workflow updates, and can you give an example of something you changed in how you work recently?

whether the candidate actively develops craft or has plateaued

Technical

How do you check for G2 and G3 continuity in Alias, and what do you actually look at when a surface feels off even though the math says it's clean?

depth of hands-on Alias skill versus just knowing the vocabulary

How do you keep a Class-A surface's highlight quality intact while also making it draft-ready for molding?

whether they understand the tension between visual craftsmanship and manufacturing constraints, not just one or the other

How do you incorporate CFD analysis feedback into a surface that was originally built for looks rather than airflow or cooling?

real exposure to functional feedback loops beyond pure aesthetics, relevant to outboard cowlings

Have you worked on exterior cowlings, covers, or touchpoint components before, and what's different about surfacing something a customer will physically handle versus something purely visual?

specific relevance to marine hardware and touchpoint-critical parts named in the posting

What other tools do you use alongside Alias, like KeyShot or Adobe Creative Suite, and how do they fit into your workflow from concept to final surface?

breadth of the supporting toolkit and whether it's used purposefully or just listed

Situational

Say you get a foam mockup or clay model with proportions that don't quite match the 2D renderings it was based on. How do you decide what to trust when you build the digital surface?

judgment in reconciling physical and digital references, a common conceptual-phase problem

If Manufacturing sends you DFM feedback that would visibly hurt the surface's appearance, how do you handle that conversation?

ability to negotiate design intent against production limits without just capitulating or digging in

What's your process for managing several CAD projects at once when deadlines overlap, especially when one needs a quick concept pass and another needs Class-A precision?

time management and ability to context-switch between conceptual and production-level rigor

This role partners closely with Mercury Marine’s Engineering, Product Integration, and Manufacturing team members to ensure surfaces meet aesthetic, functional, and manufacturing requirements while supporting Mercury Marine’s premium brand and performance expectations. You will be required to utilize your unique skillsets to analyze and blend the inputs of form, proportion, and functional requirements into highly refined three-dimensional digital models for marine propulsion systems, controls and associated components. At Brunswick, we have passion for our work and a distinct ability to deliver. Essential Functions: • Create both Conceptual and Class-A surface geometry for customer-facing marine systems, including exterior outboard cowlings, peripheral covers, touchpoint-critical  components, marine control systems, or hardware related to exterior displays. • Develop Conceptual surface geometry when applicable to programs that require surface construction exploration, less defined constraints, and sensitivity to rapid iterations. Display high proficiency by interpreting 2D sketches and renderings, clay models, or foam mockups. Digital models may also be based on modifications to existing 3D surface models. • Translating Industrial Design and Engineering criteria inputs into high‑quality CAD surfaces that meet requirements for digital craftsmanship standards on fit and finish. Display high technical proficiency ensuring G2/G3 surface continuity, curvature control, highlight quality, and draft‑ready geometry that can be turned into high fidelity prototypes or used downstream into production-intent Class-A surface data. • Maintain surface integrity through design changes and feedback loops from  Engineering criteria, packaging requirements, tooling/molding requirements, specific CFD analysis feedback, and DFM or Supplier-based feedback loops. • Balance multiple CAD projects, Data management responsibilities, and understanding engineering criteria effectively, with a strong focus on meeting program deadlines. • Participate in Design reviews, Engineering reviews milestone gates, and overall technical program reviews. Diversity of thought and experiences is fundamental when imagining the unimaginable. Certain skillsets/experiences are necessary; however, others can be developed along the way. Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Transportation Design or Product Design • 5 years of experience in Digital Surfacing, both Conceptual and Class-A surface models. • Exceptionally strong proficiency with Autodesk Alias software • Strong portfolio demonstrating Surfacing abilities, knowledge of design fundamentals integral to proper surface execution including proportions, volumes/masses and clean surface construction • Proficiency in additional tools such as KeyShot, Adobe Creative Suite • Aware of the most recent digital surface modelling techniques The anticipated pay range for this position is $86,500 - $126,800 annually.  The actual base pay offered will vary depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location.  In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus program.
