Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you reduced the cost of a part without hurting performance or quality.

What they are checking: Whether they can balance cost, quality and performance, which the posting lists together.

How do you work with suppliers who design and build the components you're responsible for?

What they are checking: Supplier collaboration skills, which are essential when many engine components are bought rather than made.

Tell me about a design change you made that had unexpected effects somewhere else in the system.

What they are checking: Whether they think in systems and learn from changes that ripple into other components.

What would you do

A field report shows a valve failing early in a marine application. How do you investigate?

What they are checking: Problem-solving across application differences, since large engines serve many demanding markets.

How do you keep the quality of a mature component high when there's little budget left for it?

What they are checking: Product maintenance mindset and their ability to prioritize the improvements that matter most.

About the work

What do you know about how air valves work in a large engine air system, and what can make them fail?

What they are checking: Basic understanding of the component this role owns and the failure modes that drive design work.

How would you approach a continuous product improvement project on a component already in production?

What they are checking: Their method for improving an existing part, including data, root cause, validation and change management.

What's the difference between NTI, NPI and CPI, and how does your role change in each?

What they are checking: Understanding of the product lifecycle stages the posting names and the different work each demands.

Which CAD and analysis tools have you used, and how do you decide when a design needs simulation versus testing?

What they are checking: Tool experience and judgment about using analysis and testing efficiently.

How do you set tolerances on a part so it works and can still be made affordably?

What they are checking: Understanding of tolerance stacks and manufacturability, a core design engineering skill.
