Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about the last time you found a safety defect on your truck. What did you do and how was it resolved?
What they are checking: Whether they report defects and refuse to drive unsafe equipment even when it slows things down.
Your MVR will be monitored the whole time you work here. Talk me through your driving record over the last three years.
What they are checking: Whether they are honest and upfront about their record, since the company will see it anyway.
How do you keep your delivery records and logs accurate when you are busy?
What they are checking: Whether they treat paperwork as part of the job, since DOT audits and inventory counts depend on it.
What would you do
You get to the trailer and the manifest does not match what is loaded. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they stop and fix a load error at the dock instead of discovering it at the next distribution center.
You are running behind and the cross-dock wants you there in an hour, but the weather has turned bad. How do you handle that?
What they are checking: Whether safety wins over schedule pressure and whether they communicate delays instead of speeding.
Sometimes you also make customer deliveries. How do you handle a customer who says part of their order is missing?
What they are checking: Whether they stay professional, document the issue and get it to the right people instead of arguing.
About the work
Walk me through your pre-trip inspection on a Class A or B truck, in the order you actually do it.
What they are checking: Whether the inspection is a real habit they could recite in order, not a checkbox they sign without looking.
You carry hazardous materials between distribution centers. What do you check on placards, shipping papers and load securement before you leave the yard?
What they are checking: Whether they truly understand hazmat endorsement duties, where a missed detail can mean fines or a dangerous spill.
What does FMCSA hours-of-service mean for your day, and what do you do if a delay is going to push you past your limit?
What they are checking: Whether they follow hours rules even when pressured to finish a run, which protects them and the company.
What material handling equipment have you run, and how do you load a trailer so freight does not shift?
What they are checking: Whether they can load safely and smartly, since shifted freight damages product and can tip a truck.
