Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
Behavioral
Tell me about a time you found something suspicious on a slide that another screener or even a pathologist might have missed. How did you handle it?
attention to detail and confidence in flagging findings even when it means pushing back on someone senior
Tell me about a time you caught a specimen labeling or demographic error before it caused a problem downstream.
vigilance around specimen identification since errors here directly affect patient safety
Tell me about a time a change in lab procedure or policy was rolled out and you weren't fully on board at first. What did you do?
willingness to support organizational change rather than resist it quietly
What does your continuing education and proficiency testing routine look like? How do you stay current beyond the minimum required hours?
genuine commitment to ongoing competency versus doing the bare minimum to stay certified
Tell me about a time you had to document a quality assurance issue you noticed in the lab. What happened after you reported it?
follow-through on QA documentation and comfort surfacing problems through proper channels
Technical
Walk me through how you screen a gynecologic slide from start to finish. What are you looking for at each pass?
whether the candidate has real, systematic screening technique versus just familiarity with terms
How do you keep your false negative fraction and discrepancy rate within acceptable range, day to day, not just in theory?
understanding of CLIA'88 quality metrics and personal accountability for accuracy, not just knowing the regulation exists
Describe your experience preparing slides from fine needle aspiration specimens. What technique issues have you run into and how did you fix them?
hands-on FNA slide prep competency, not just classroom exposure
How do you approach a case that's borderline between reactive changes and something that needs pathologist review?
clinical judgment about when to escalate versus call it themselves
Situational
Say you're mid-shift and notice your slide count is putting you near the daily workload limit set by CLIA. What do you do?
whether they respect workload caps under pressure to keep pace, rather than cutting corners
You notice an instrument is giving results that look slightly off from what you'd expect. Walk me through how you'd investigate that.
troubleshooting instinct and whether they escalate appropriately instead of ignoring drift
A lab aide or newer colleague asks you for help interpreting a tricky finding while you're in the middle of your own workload. How do you balance that?
ability to provide technical guidance to others without letting personal productivity or accuracy slip
How would you handle a disagreement with a pathologist over the interpretation of a case you screened?
professional communication and confidence defending their screening findings appropriately
