Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to take a vague business request from a product manager or sales stakeholder and turn it into a technical spec.

ability to bridge non-technical stakeholders and technical delivery, a core function of this solo role

Tell me about a UX problem you found in a configurator or quoting tool and how you fixed it without a dedicated UX team.

user-centered thinking and initiative in an environment described as lean with high ownership

Tell me about a time a CPQ change you shipped caused an unexpected problem for users. What did you do next?

accountability and root-cause discipline versus blame-shifting

How have you worked within an Agile or product-oriented team before, and what was your actual role day to day?

whether Agile experience is genuine team participation or just exposure to the term

Technical

Walk me through a product model you built in Oracle CPQ that had complex dependencies and constraints, like an engine that only pairs with certain controls or rigging options.

whether the candidate has actually built nontrivial CPQ models, not just configured simple pick-lists

Tell me about a time you wrote BML, JavaScript, or SQL to solve a pricing or validation problem in CPQ. What was the problem and how did you solve it?

hands-on scripting depth versus surface-level CPQ admin experience

Describe an integration you built or maintained between CPQ and a CRM or ERP system. What broke, and how did you find the root cause?

real experience with data flow troubleshooting across systems, not just theoretical integration knowledge

What's an example of a guided selling or dynamic upsell feature you designed, and how did you decide what to recommend to the user?

depth on guided selling specifically called out in preferred qualifications versus basic CPQ setup

What have you done to reduce technical debt in a configuration system, and how did you convince others it was worth the time?

long-term system thinking and ability to justify maintenance work to business stakeholders

Situational

Say you're adding a new Mercury outboard engine line to the configurator, and it has constraints tied to boat rigging, prop compatibility, and accessory add-ons. How would you approach modeling that?

ability to translate a real product launch scenario into structured CPQ logic

A partner reports that quotes are coming out with the wrong price on a configuration that worked yesterday. Where do you start looking?

systematic debugging instinct across configuration rules, pricing logic, and data sources

You're the only person on this team handling CPQ. Two product launches need configurator updates in the same week, and a partner has an urgent production issue. How do you prioritize?

how they manage competing deadlines with no direct reports to delegate to

If you had to explain to a sales rep why a certain engine and prop combination isn't offered as an option in the configurator, how would you figure out the answer and communicate it?

communication skill translating technical configuration logic into plain language for non-technical users
