Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you noticed something was off with a patient before anyone else did. What did you see, and what did you do about it?

whether the candidate is attentive enough to catch subtle changes in a high-acuity patient and knows to escalate to the RN promptly

Describe a time you had to follow instructions from a nurse that you didn't fully understand or agree with. What did you do?

whether the candidate respects the scope of practice and chain of communication instead of acting on their own judgment

Tell me about a time you had to give bad or hard news, or comfort a scared family member, even though it wasn't really your job to explain the medical details.

emotional composure and boundaries when family members of critically ill neuro patients are distressed

What does it mean to treat a patient and their family with dignity, especially when the patient can't communicate for themselves, like someone who is sedated or has a brain injury?

understanding of holistic, respectful care standards mentioned in the job posting

Tell me about a time you worked with a coworker who wasn't pulling their weight during a busy shift. How did you handle it?

teamwork and conflict handling in a fast-paced, interdependent unit

If you're new to the CNA role or the ICU setting, how do you plan to learn the specific things a neuro patient needs that might be different from a general medical floor?

willingness to learn and awareness that this unit requires specialized knowledge beyond basic CNA training

Technical

Walk me through how you'd take and document vital signs on a patient with frequent neuro checks, and what you'd do if a reading seemed abnormal.

basic clinical competence and understanding of when to alert the RN rather than wait

This unit uses patient handling equipment for lifts over 35 pounds or when a patient can't assist. Tell me about your experience with lift equipment or working as part of a two-person lift team.

comfort and safety practice with mechanical lifts and teamwork during patient handling

How comfortable are you with continuous exposure to blood, body fluids, and using protective equipment like gowns and gloves throughout a shift?

realistic acceptance of the physical and infection-control demands of the unit

Situational

In a neuro ICU, a lot of patients have altered mental status or can suddenly become confused or agitated. How would you keep yourself and the patient safe if someone became combative during care?

safety awareness and de-escalation skill with cognitively impaired patients, not just physical technique

You're working a 12-hour shift and get assigned several patients at once, some needing turns, some needing vitals, one needing help to the bathroom right now. How do you decide what comes first?

prioritization skills under real time pressure typical of ICU pace

If you noticed a patient's IV line was pulled out or their monitor was alarming while you were assisting another patient, what would you do?

judgment about immediate response versus finishing a current task, and knowing limits of what a CNA can touch

This role has rotating weekends, holidays, and 12-hour day shifts. What has your experience been with a schedule like that, and how do you manage your energy over a 12-hour shift?

realistic fit with the schedule and stamina for physically demanding shifts
