Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

What would you do

The role includes project management and consultant oversight. How do you hold a consultant to a design you're not doing yourself?

What they are checking: Whether they can hold consultants to the county's design and schedule, since the role oversees outsourced work it does not produce.

Utility coordination is named explicitly. What makes it difficult, and how do you keep it from delaying a project?

What they are checking: Whether they know utility conflicts cause delays and plan ahead, since coordination failures are a common reason road projects run late.

You'd help prepare the five-year highway capital plan and manage part of the asset management system. How do you decide which repairs come first?

What they are checking: Whether they can rank repairs sensibly with limited funds, since the capital plan has to stretch public money across a whole network.

The posting asks for a bachelor's in civil or environmental engineering and lists an hourly range of $38.69 to $53.71. Does that work for you?

What they are checking: Whether they meet the degree requirement and accept the posted pay, since confirming both early saves time for everyone involved.

About the work

This role covers transportation project development, design and construction for Waukesha County. Walk me through a road project you took from concept to construction.

What they are checking: Whether they have carried a project from concept through construction, since this role spans the whole life of a county road project.

The posting names CADD, Civil 3D and geographic information systems. Which have you used, and what have you produced in them?

What they are checking: Whether they have used the named software to produce real work, since the posting requires these tools from day one.

How do you prepare a cost estimate for a highway project you'd be willing to defend to a board?

What they are checking: Whether they estimate carefully enough to defend the numbers to a board, since public money demands credible cost estimates.

What goes into an environmental assessment for a transportation project?

What they are checking: Whether they know what an environmental assessment involves, since this is a named duty that requires real process knowledge.

Walk me through how you'd approach a drainage study for a roadway that keeps flooding.

What they are checking: Whether they can apply hydraulics to a practical drainage problem, since roadway flooding needs field-ready solutions, not just theory.

How do you use traffic data to make a safety decision about an intersection?

What they are checking: Whether they use crash and traffic data to guide safety decisions, since intersection choices should rest on evidence, not opinion.
