Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
In long-term care, the relationships you build with residents matter as much as the care. Tell me about a resident or person you built a real connection with.
What they are checking: Whether they see residents as people with a home here, not just tasks on a list.
Tell me about a time a resident's family member was unhappy with care. How did you handle it?
What they are checking: Whether they listen respectfully and bring concerns to the nurse instead of getting defensive.
This is a part-time role at 20 hours a week. Why does this schedule and this kind of work fit you right now?
What they are checking: Whether they want long-term care work specifically and will stay reliable on a part-time night schedule.
What would you do
This is a night shift, 10:15 p.m. to 6:15 a.m., in long-term care. What do you think nights look like for residents, and what does a good night shift CNA do?
What they are checking: Whether they understand night care means quiet rounding, repositioning and noticing changes while residents sleep.
A resident with dementia wakes up confused and wants to leave the building. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they can redirect gently and keep the resident safe without arguing or using force.
You notice a resident has a red area on their hip that wasn't there last week. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they report skin changes to the nurse right away, since pressure injuries can get worse fast.
If you saw another staff member treating a resident roughly, what would you do?
What they are checking: Whether they would report possible abuse right away, which is required by law in long-term care.
About the work
How do you help a resident keep their dignity when they need help with bathing or toileting?
What they are checking: Whether they practice privacy and respect in everyday personal care, which residents notice most.
Walk me through how you reposition a resident who can't move on their own.
What they are checking: Whether they use safe technique and understand why turning on schedule prevents pressure injuries.
How do you take an assignment from the nurse and let them know when something has changed with a resident?
What they are checking: Whether they communicate clearly and promptly with the RN in charge about changes in a resident's condition.
