Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
Behavioral
Tell me about a time you noticed a change in a patient's condition and had to report it to the RN. What did you see and what happened next?
whether the candidate understands their scope on a telemetry floor and reports changes promptly instead of waiting or acting outside their role
What does it mean to you to treat a patient and their family with dignity and respect, especially when a patient is confused or agitated?
genuine understanding of holistic, patient-centered care versus just reciting a phrase
Have you ever made a mistake while caring for a patient, like forgetting a task or recording something wrong? What did you do about it?
honesty and willingness to disclose errors quickly rather than hide them
Tell me about a time you had to work closely with an RN or other CNA to get something done for a patient. How did that go?
teamwork and communication style within the care team hierarchy
How do you keep yourself organized across a full shift so nothing gets missed, especially with rotating weekends and holidays?
organizational habits and reliability given the demanding 12-hour rotating schedule
Tell me about a time you had to stay calm and keep working even though the unit was very busy or stressful.
resilience and steadiness under the pace of a high-acuity telemetry floor
Technical
Walk me through how you'd safely reposition or transfer a patient who weighs more than you can lift alone.
knowledge of safe patient handling policy, including using lift equipment and asking for a second person rather than risking injury
What basic vital signs and observations would you check on a patient during a routine round, and what would make you flag something to the nurse right away?
baseline clinical knowledge of normal versus abnormal findings and threshold for escalation
What steps do you take to protect yourself and your patients from exposure to blood, body fluids, or other hazards during a shift?
understanding of infection control and standard precautions given continuous exposure risk
Do you have your CNA certification in good standing with the state registry, and are you comfortable getting BLS certification within your first 45 days if you don't already have it?
verifying compliance with required credentials and timeline for certification
Situational
You're working a 12-hour night shift on a med-surg tele unit with several patients needing vitals, repositioning, and toileting around the same time. How do you decide what to do first?
prioritization skills and comfort managing a full patient load without direct supervision every minute
A patient on telemetry monitoring tells you they feel short of breath but their family is asking you unrelated questions at the same moment. What do you do?
ability to recognize a possible urgent clinical sign and act on it immediately despite distractions
If a patient refuses care, like a bath or getting out of bed, what would you do?
patience, communication skills, and knowing when to involve the nurse rather than force compliance
