Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
Behavioral
Tell me about a time you noticed something off with a patient before anyone else did. What did you see, and what did you do about it?
whether the candidate is attentive to subtle changes and knows to escalate rather than sit on it, which matters a lot in a critical care unit
Tell me about a time a patient or family member was upset or scared. What did you do?
bedside manner and communication skills, especially important in an ICU where families are under stress
Describe a time you had to communicate an observation about a patient to the RN that turned out to be important. How did you bring it to them?
whether they understand their role as the RN's eyes and ears and can communicate clinically relevant information clearly
Have you ever had to provide post mortem care or support a family right after a death? What was that like for you?
emotional resilience and professionalism around end-of-life situations, common in a MICU
What hospital experience have you had so far, and what part of MICU-level care feels most different or new to you?
honest self-assessment of readiness for a higher-acuity unit, since only two years of general hospital experience is preferred, not ICU experience specifically
Technical
How do you measure and document blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, and intake and output, and what do you do if a number looks wrong or doesn't match what you'd expect for that patient?
basic clinical competency and whether they double-check readings instead of just recording them
If you're helping reposition or transfer a patient who weighs close to 150 pounds and needs a sliding transfer, what steps do you take to protect both the patient and yourself?
knowledge of safe transfer technique and body mechanics given the physical demands listed
You collect a urine specimen for point-of-care testing. Walk me through how you label and handle it so there's no mix-up.
attention to detail and understanding of specimen identification protocols, a patient safety issue
What's your process for hand hygiene and using protective equipment when going in and out of an isolation room, especially back to back with several patients?
infection control discipline, critical in an ICU setting with vulnerable patients
How comfortable are you documenting in an electronic medical record, and have you used one before?
basic computer literacy and EMR familiarity, which the posting explicitly requires
Situational
In a MICU, patients can be unstable and change fast. Walk me through how you would prioritize your tasks if you had four patients needing vitals, one call light going off, and a bed alarm sounding at the same time.
organizational skill and judgment under pressure specific to a high-acuity unit
Tell me about a time you were assigned an unfamiliar task, like a bladder scan or IV removal, under an RN's direction. How did you make sure you did it safely?
willingness to work within scope while following direction, and comfort asking questions when unsure
If you notice a patient's skin looks red or broken down during repositioning, what do you do next?
knowledge of skin integrity protocols and whether they act on early warning signs instead of waiting
Tell me about a busy shift where you had errands, stocking, and direct patient care all competing for your time. How did you get it all done?
time management and reliability in a role with a lot of non-glamorous but necessary tasks
