Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to track down a signature or document from someone who was hard to reach, like an emergency contact who wasn't answering the phone.

persistence and judgment when the required outcome depends on someone outside the hospital's control

Describe your experience with clerical work in a healthcare setting. What systems did you use day to day?

whether the 2-3 years of healthcare clerical experience is real and relevant, not just office admin

Tell me about a time someone called you upset or angry. How did you keep the conversation professional?

composure and communication skill for handling difficult calls from families or patients

Tell me about a time you noticed you were about to make a mistake with confidential patient information, and what you did.

understanding of HIPAA and patient privacy in practice, not just policy recitation

Technical

What does the 48-hour window mean to you, and what would you do if you realized late in the day that a delivery was about to miss it?

actual familiarity with the IM timing rule versus surface-level awareness

Have you used Care Connection or a similar documentation system before? How comfortable are you learning a new one quickly?

technical adaptability and honesty about tool gaps

What do you know about the vendors involved in discharge planning, things like home health, hospice, LTACHs, or durable medical equipment?

whether the candidate understands the discharge ecosystem or would need heavy onboarding

Situational

Walk me through how you'd handle getting an Important Message from Medicare letter signed when the patient is confused and can't sign for themselves, and discharge is happening in a few hours.

whether the candidate knows the IM/Code 44 process and can problem-solve under a tight, non-negotiable deadline

A social worker asks you to fax medical records to a durable medical equipment vendor for a discharge happening this afternoon, and the fax machine is jammed. What do you do?

resourcefulness and prioritization under a real operational obstacle

How would you juggle monitoring multiple voicemail lines, following up on a bed availability question, and preparing meeting minutes, all in the same afternoon?

ability to prioritize and multitask independently without direct supervision

This schedule runs Thursday through Monday with no holidays off and requires you every weekend. How does that fit with your life right now?

realistic commitment to the fixed weekend schedule before it becomes a retention problem

If a Care Manager and a Social Worker gave you conflicting instructions about who needs an IM letter delivered first, how would you sort that out?

judgment in navigating competing directions from two different supervising roles
