Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you grew revenue or share with an existing account by introducing them to a new product line or a higher tier of product.

evidence of consultative upselling skill, which maps directly to moving OEM boatbuilders toward Racing applications

Describe a time you had to sell a technical or high-performance product to a customer who was skeptical or already loyal to a competitor's engine or platform.

persuasion and credibility under resistance, which the posting names directly as a requirement for Racing sales

Tell me about a cross-functional project where you had to get engineering, service, or supply chain to move on something a customer needed. How did you make that happen?

ability to translate customer requirements internally and drive alignment across departments that don't report to sales

Give me an example of coaching or consulting a dealer or partner toward better performance, not just taking their order.

the coaching and consultative dimension called out in the job description, distinct from pure transactional selling

What's your read on why someone with 3 or more years in the marine or recreational industry succeeds or fails in a remote, quota-carrying role like this one?

self-awareness about the demands of independent, travel-heavy sales work and honest reflection on their own fit

Technical

How do you build a sales forecast for a business line like Mercury Racing where the customer base and demand patterns are less established than a traditional OEM territory?

whether they have real forecasting discipline versus guessing, given the job explicitly calls out financial projections and demand planning

What CRM and reporting tools have you used to manage a territory, and how did you use the data to change what you were doing day to day rather than just log activity?

practical CRM fluency and whether they treat data as a decision tool or a compliance chore

What do you know about Mercury's position in the marine propulsion market compared to Yamaha, Suzuki, or Honda Marine, and how would that shape your pitch to a boatbuilder considering repowering?

industry knowledge and whether they've done homework on the competitive landscape specific to marine propulsion

Situational

Walk me through how you'd split your time between managing the existing OEM boatbuilder relationships in your Southeast and Gulf Coast territory and building out a national Mercury Racing pipeline from scratch.

whether the candidate can realistically juggle a defined regional book of business with an open-ended national build-out without letting one starve the other

One of your independent boatbuilder partners is unhappy about lead times or a product issue and is starting to talk to a competitor. What do you do in the first week?

how the candidate protects Mercury's commercial interests while actually solving the customer's problem, not just smoothing it over

You're 50 percent on the road, hitting boat shows on weekends and visiting boatbuilders during the week. How do you decide which events and accounts get your time when everything seems urgent?

prioritization skill and self-management for a remote, travel-heavy role with no daily supervision

How would you go about finding new high-performance market segments for Mercury Racing that don't already have a relationship with us?

whether they have an actual prospecting method versus relying only on inbound or existing contacts

A boatbuilder wants pricing or terms you can't approve on your own, and corporate is slow to respond. How do you keep the deal alive and keep the customer trusting you?

negotiation instincts and how they manage the tension between customer advocacy and internal constraints
