Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Credit and collections touches customers who are behind on bills. What does that mean for how a system should be designed?

What they are checking: Whether they think about the person at the other end

What do you want to be able to do by the end of this internship, and where would you most need help?

What they are checking: Whether they have a concrete learning goal and can name where they'll need help, which shows self-awareness and readiness to grow.

What would you do

You're told a process works one way and you watch it work another way. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they notice and report when real work differs from the official process, because that gap is exactly what a new system must handle.

You're in a meeting and you don't understand what's being discussed. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they will ask questions when confused rather than nodding along, because interns who stay quiet often lose time and make avoidable mistakes.

The posting names Texas or Wisconsin locations and Xcel internships run to stated dates with an hourly range and a minimum class standing. Which location works for you, and where are you in your degree?

What they are checking: Whether the location, dates, pay and class standing requirements actually work for them, so there are no surprises once the internship is offered.

About the work

This internship supports the credit and collections part of a multi-year customer system modernization program. What do you understand about what a modernization program like that involves?

What they are checking: Whether they took time to understand the customer system modernization they would join, which shows real interest beyond simply wanting an internship.

What does a business analyst actually do on a system program?

What they are checking: Whether they understand what a business analyst actually does on a system program, rather than only knowing the job title.

How would you document a current process so someone could design a new system from it?

What they are checking: Whether they can document a current process clearly enough for designers to build from, since that is the core task interns do here.

How would you test a new system feature before customers see it?

What they are checking: Whether they have a basic instinct for testing a feature thoroughly, since catching problems before customers see them is part of any system program.

How comfortable are you in Excel, and what's the most useful thing you've built in it?

What they are checking: Whether they have practical Excel skills shown by something real they built, since analysts use spreadsheets constantly to organize and test data.

Do you want a workplace that will challenge you and offer you opportunities to learn and grow? A position at Xcel Energy could be just what you’re looking for. At Xcel Energy, our employees are the driving force behind our success. So we make sure that, here, you can be your best. Doing work that makes a difference for neighbors and communities. Working with a team you can count on to push you. Expanding skills, staying ready for change, and capturing opportunities to grow. All with the support, rewards and recognition you need to thrive – during your internship and beyond. Xcel Energy is modernizing the systems and processes behind every customer interaction through its multi-year CIS Modernization Program. Within the program, the Customer Core organization is structured into functional towers that each own a major area of the customer lifecycle. This role sits on the Credit & Collections functional tower, which is responsible for the processes and system capabilities that manage customer credit, billing collections, payment arrangements, deposits, and past-due accounts. The Business Analyst Intern will support the Credit & Collections tower within the Business Transformation team, working alongside experienced business functional consultants and transformation leaders. The intern will help gather and document business requirements, support functional design workshops, and contribute to the analysis that shapes the future-state solution. This is a hands-on opportunity to learn business analysis on a large-scale enterprise transformation while building domain knowledge in the utility industry. The position is based in Amarillo, TX or Eau Claire, WI, with a hybrid schedule and occasional collaboration at the program's Denver work location. Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to: • Assist in gathering, documenting, and organizing business requirements for Credit & Collections processes and system capabilities. • Support requirements and design workshops — preparing materials and capturing notes, decisions, and action items for follow-up. • Help document current-state ('as-is') and proposed future-state ('to-be') processes, and maintain requirements traceability. • Compile and summarize data to support analysis, decision-making, and status reporting. • Coordinate with business subject-matter experts, functional consultants, and other towers to clarify open questions. • Support testing activities by helping document test scenarios and track results as capabilities are validated. • This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs. Minimum Requirements: • Current student, Sophomore or higher • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Finance, Accounting or Economics. Information Systems, Business Analytics, or Data Analytics / Data Science / Project Management • Minimal travel for this role (10-15%) • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy. Preferred Qualifications: • Coursework or projects involving business process analysis, requirements gathering, or data analysis. • Interest in the energy / utility industry or in large-scale technology transformation. • Familiarity with process mapping, flowcharting, or business analysis concepts. • Exposure to enterprise systems (e.g., SAP or other customer information / ERP platforms) — a plus, not required. • Experience with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, or other collaboration tools. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. • Clear written and verbal communication skills. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). • Ability to organize information, manage multiple tasks, and follow through in a fast-paced team environment.
