Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk me through the last really tough automation breakdown you fixed. How did you narrow it down?

What they are checking: Whether they troubleshoot in a logical order across mechanical, electrical and controls instead of swapping parts at random.

Tell me about an improvement you made to a piece of equipment that raised uptime or quality for good.

What they are checking: Whether they go beyond fixing breakdowns and look for lasting fixes, which this role is expected to lead.

Tell me about working with an engineer on a new machine. What did you bring that they didn't have?

What they are checking: Whether they partner well with automation engineers and contribute floor-level knowledge on new equipment.

How do you document what you found and fixed so the next shift doesn't have to start from zero?

What they are checking: Whether they share knowledge across shifts, which keeps the whole plant's equipment running.

What would you do

A robot cell stops with a fault you've never seen, and the line is down. What do you do in the first ten minutes?

What they are checking: Whether they can stay calm, keep people safe and get to the root of the fault under production pressure.

You keep getting called to the same machine for the same jam every shift. How do you deal with it?

What they are checking: Whether they find and remove the root cause instead of clearing the same jam over and over.

About the work

How comfortable are you going online with a PLC to find out why a sequence is stuck? Which platforms have you worked in?

What they are checking: Whether they can read ladder logic and use the controls to diagnose, a core skill for this hands-on role.

What's your approach to troubleshooting a pneumatic actuator that moves slowly or doesn't reach position?

What they are checking: Whether they check air supply, valves, flow controls, sensors and mechanical binding in a sensible order.

How do you apply lockout/tagout when you need to work on a robot or a machine with stored energy like air or springs?

What they are checking: Whether they truly respect all energy sources before reaching into equipment, which is non-negotiable here.

How do you support a production line through a changeover or a new product introduction so it starts up cleanly?

What they are checking: Whether they plan and verify settings, tooling and sensors ahead of time rather than fixing problems after start-up.

What do you check first when a vision system or sensor starts giving false rejects?

What they are checking: Whether they know common causes like lighting changes, dirty lenses, mounting shifts and settings drift.
