Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a capital equipment project you managed from concept through startup. What was the equipment, what was the budget, and how close did you land to your original numbers?

whether they've actually run a full project lifecycle and can speak to real cost and schedule outcomes, not just pieces of a project

Describe a project where R&D or product development changed specs after you'd already started designing the line. How did you handle that?

ability to manage scope changes and cross-functional friction without blowing the budget or timeline

Tell me about a cost-saving or productivity project you drove on existing equipment, not something brand new. What did you find and what changed?

comfort improving existing lines versus only having greenfield project experience

Tell me about a time you had to influence a peer or another department to adopt a new standard or process when you had no direct authority over them.

ability to lead through influence in a matrixed manufacturing environment, which this role clearly demands

Tell me about a time you had to mentor or coach someone less experienced through a technical problem. What did that look like day to day?

readiness for the informal technical-resource and mentoring expectations of this role, since it isn't a people-management title but still expects leadership

Technical

Tell me about a time you had to develop equipment specifications for a piece of custom machinery. How did you translate process requirements into something a vendor could actually build?

depth of hands-on experience writing specs versus just reviewing vendor proposals

What's your experience with filling, labeling, or packaging equipment for aerosol or liquid products specifically?

whether their hands-on equipment background actually matches SCJ's product types or is a generalization

How do you go about building a capital project budget from scratch, and what do you build in for contingency?

real cost-estimating discipline versus rough guesses learned from someone else's spreadsheet

What do you know about OEE, and can you give an example of applying it to justify or design a new piece of equipment?

whether OEE is a real working tool for them or just a term they've heard in meetings

Have you used FMEA or process control planning on a project? Give me a specific example of a failure mode you caught before it became a real problem.

whether FMEA is something they've actually applied versus a checkbox they list on a resume

Situational

Say you're mid-project and the vendor comes back saying the custom equipment can't hit the throughput target you specified. What do you do next?

how they handle a real technical setback under budget and timeline pressure without panicking or hiding it from stakeholders

Imagine you're partway through a project and you realize you're going to miss budget by 15 percent. Walk me through how you'd handle that conversation with your funding approvers.

transparency and judgment when the news is bad, not just technical problem-solving

How have you managed a vendor or contractor on site to make sure they were following safety requirements, especially around machine guarding or lockout procedures?

practical grasp of machine safety and contractor oversight, not just familiarity with OSHA terminology

This role sits between Maintenance, Manufacturing, Safety, and Lean teams, all of whom want different things from a project. How do you keep a project moving when those groups don't agree?

skill at cross-functional coordination and prioritization in a plant environment with competing agendas
