Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a pitch book you helped build. What did you do beyond the numbers?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that a pitch has to tell a client story, and can shape that story themselves.

How do you manage analysts on a deal team when everyone is stretched thin?

What they are checking: Whether they can delegate clearly, check work well, and protect quality without simply doing everything themselves.

Tell me about a time you caught a significant error in your own work late in a process.

What they are checking: Whether they own and fix mistakes quickly, since an uncorrected error in a client model can cost the mandate.

Why BMO's integrated capital markets model, and how would you use the wider platform for an industrials client?

What they are checking: Whether they see how lending, treasury and advisory can work together for a client, and have a real reason for joining.

What would you do

You are running due diligence and find something in the data room that contradicts management's story. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they escalate issues promptly and carefully instead of burying a problem that could damage the deal or the bank.

Your VP and MD give you conflicting comments on a deck due to a client in the morning. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they resolve conflicts proactively and communicate up rather than guessing or silently picking one side.

How would you approach monitoring a portfolio of middle market clients for changes that might create a deal opportunity?

What they are checking: Whether they think like a business developer who spots triggers for M&A or financing before competitors do.

About the work

Walk me through a DCF for an industrial manufacturer. Where do you think the most judgment sits?

What they are checking: Whether they understand cyclicality, capex intensity and working capital, not just the mechanics of a model.

Which industrials subsector do you find most interesting right now, and what is driving deal activity there?

What they are checking: Whether they follow the sector closely enough to contribute ideas to pitches rather than only formatting slides.

How would you value a middle market private industrial company differently from a public peer?

What they are checking: Whether they understand size discounts, comparable selection and the quality of private company financials.
