Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you found a covenant violation or borrowing base discrepancy. What did you do next and how did you handle the client conversation?

real experience catching and escalating risk issues, and comfort delivering hard news to clients

Describe a complex asset-based deal you helped close from approval to funding. What made it complicated and what was your specific role versus credit and legal?

depth of hands-on closing experience versus being a bystander on deals others drove

Tell me about a client relationship you grew significantly over time. What did you do to deepen it beyond the original loan?

actual cross-sell and relationship-deepening track record versus just holding a book of business

Tell me about a time a deal you wanted to close got rejected or significantly restructured by credit. How did you handle that internally and with the client?

whether they respect credit discipline and can manage client expectations under bank constraints

How do you stay current on industry conditions across the different sectors your clients operate in, and can you give an example where that awareness changed how you managed an account?

whether they proactively track external risk factors or only react after something goes wrong

Technical

Walk me through how you monitor a borrowing base and what red flags would tell you a client's collateral picture is deteriorating.

whether the candidate actually understands ABL mechanics like advance rates, ineligibles, and collateral monitoring, not just general credit analysis

What financial metrics do you rely on most when evaluating an ABL borrower's health, and how do they differ from what you'd look at in a cash-flow lending relationship?

whether they genuinely understand what makes ABL underwriting distinct from other commercial lending

Walk me through how you'd build a pipeline of new asset-based lending opportunities in a market like Chicago. Where do you actually find these deals?

concrete business development approach versus vague talk about networking

What's your experience negotiating loan documentation directly, and can you give an example where you pushed back on terms proposed by outside counsel or the client?

direct experience in the documentation and closing mechanics this role owns, not just relationship management

Situational

Say you're closing a deal and legal counsel and the client's counsel are stuck on a definition in the loan agreement that affects your collateral position. How do you move that forward without blowing the deal or the timeline?

negotiation skill and ability to balance protecting the bank's interests against keeping deals on track

One of your portfolio clients is in a cyclical industry that's now under pressure. How would you go about assessing whether this is a temporary dip or something that changes your risk view?

judgment in distinguishing noise from real credit deterioration and how they'd structure a response

How do you go about bringing in partners from treasury, wealth management, or capital markets on a deal without the client feeling like they're being handed off to a dozen people?

ability to coordinate across a large bank while keeping the client experience coherent

A long-standing client's covenant compliance is slipping but they're pushing back hard on your proposed amendments and pricing changes. How do you handle that conversation?

ability to hold firm on risk mitigation while preserving the relationship
