Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you took over a service line or program that was underperforming financially. What did you find, and what did you do first?

whether the candidate has real experience diagnosing operational and financial problems, not just managing steady-state operations

Tell me about a physician contract negotiation you led that got difficult. What was at stake and how did you get to an agreement?

comfort and skill negotiating with physicians specifically, since physician alignment is central to this role

You're managing a matrixed environment where you don't have direct authority over the nursing or physician leaders you need to partner with. Give me an example of getting something done in that kind of structure.

whether they can actually operate through influence in a complex organization rather than command and control

Tell me about a time you had to manage a variance to budget that wasn't going away on its own. What corrective actions did you actually implement, and how did you know they worked?

whether budget management experience is real and results-oriented, not just monitoring

Describe a time you had to have a hard performance conversation with someone reporting to you, including a case where it led to a disciplinary action. How did you handle it?

whether they've actually done the harder parts of people management, not just team-building

What's an example of a change management effort you led that met real resistance from clinical staff or physicians, and how did you get buy-in?

change management skill in a clinical, physician-heavy environment as opposed to a purely corporate one

Technical

How do you build a business case for a new clinical program or site of care, and what financial metrics do you lean on most?

fluency with healthcare financial planning and capital/operating budget mechanics, not just strategic vision

What operational or quality metrics would you put on a dashboard for a GI service line, and how would you decide which ones matter most day to day?

depth of knowledge in ambulatory GI operations specifically versus generic healthcare management language

How do you think about workforce retention and leadership development in a service line where staffing is tight across multiple sites?

whether workforce strategy is a real practice for them or just a talking point

Situational

Say you're six months in and the monthly operational review shows GI volumes are flat, revenue is under budget, and one site's patient satisfaction scores have dropped. Walk me through how you'd approach that review and what you'd do next.

structured problem-solving under multiple competing signals and whether they know how to run a performance review that leads to action, not just reporting

Two of your site administrators disagree on how to roll out a new best practice across their locations, and the disagreement is starting to affect their teams. How do you handle it?

conflict resolution style and whether they default to imposing a decision or building alignment

How would you approach integrating a new facility or newly acquired practice into existing service line operations without disrupting current patient volume?

experience with integration work, since the posting explicitly calls out program planning for new facilities

A key referring physician group tells you they're unhappy with access times and is considering sending patients elsewhere. What do you do in the first two weeks?

urgency, stakeholder management, and understanding of access as a competitive and clinical issue

How do you balance pushing for growth and efficiency in a service line with protecting clinical quality and patient safety?

whether they can articulate a real tradeoff framework instead of saying both can always be optimized together
