Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a Generative AI feature you put into production. What broke that didn't break in the demo?

What they are checking: Whether they have real production experience with LLMs, including the reliability problems demos hide.

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new AI library or tool quickly.

What they are checking: Whether they can keep up in a fast-moving field without losing engineering discipline.

What would you do

You're building an AI tool for an insurance company. How do you keep customer data safe when it goes through a model?

What they are checking: Whether they think about privacy, data handling and access control in a regulated industry.

Your AI feature works, but the model costs are much higher than expected. What would you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can find practical ways to cut cost like caching, smaller models or fewer calls.

About the work

How would you design a backend service that calls an LLM so it stays fast and reliable when the model is slow or down?

What they are checking: Whether they plan for timeouts, retries, fallbacks and cost in enterprise systems that depend on a model.

When would you fine-tune a model, and when would you use prompting or retrieval instead?

What they are checking: Whether they choose the simplest approach that works rather than fine-tuning by default.

How do you test and evaluate an LLM feature when the output isn't the same every time?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real evaluation approach, since nondeterministic output can't be tested like normal code.

Walk me through how you'd containerize a service with Docker and deploy it on Kubernetes.

What they are checking: Whether they have hands-on deployment skills, not just application code experience.

Which backend framework are you strongest in, like Spring Boot, Node.js or FastAPI, and why would you pick it for an AI service?

What they are checking: Whether they know their tools well and can choose based on the job rather than habit.

How do you monitor an AI system in production to catch quality problems, not just outages?

What they are checking: Whether they watch for bad answers and drift, since an LLM can fail quietly while the service looks healthy.
