Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

How do you explain an actuarial concept to a marketing or product audience without losing what matters?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate actuarial ideas for non-actuaries without distorting them, since product and marketing decisions depend on that understanding.

What would you do

A product team proposes a coverage change you think prices badly. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they can push back on a product idea with evidence while staying collaborative, since unwelcome analysis still needs to be heard.

This is a remote role on a small, close-knit actuarial team where you'd wear several hats. How do you work when you're the only person on a problem?

What they are checking: Whether they work well independently and remotely on a small team, since there may be nobody else to hand a problem to.

About the work

This role supports pricing and profitability for pet insurance. What's different about pricing pet insurance compared with other property and casualty lines?

What they are checking: Whether they have thought about what makes pet insurance pricing unique, such as veterinary costs and breed risk, before the interview.

The posting names developing price elasticity curves to forecast the impact of rating changes on retention and conversion. Walk me through how you'd build one.

What they are checking: Whether they can actually build elasticity curves, since pricing changes affect retention and conversion and the business needs reliable forecasts.

How do you build generalized linear model rating factors, and when would you reach for something other than a generalized linear model?

What they are checking: Method depth plus judgment about when the standard tool isn't right

You'd write advanced queries against large line-item veterinary bill databases. What's the most complex data work you've done, and what made it hard?

What they are checking: Whether they have handled large, messy claims data hands-on, because veterinary line-item data requires careful querying to produce trustworthy analysis.

How do you monitor whether an existing rating plan is still performing?

What they are checking: Whether they track rating plan performance over time, since pricing that worked at launch can drift as costs and customers change.

Walk me through supporting a rate filing, including how you'd respond to a regulatory objection.

What they are checking: Whether they have real rate filing experience and can answer regulators clearly, because filings that stall delay pricing changes across states.

The posting requires an ACAS designation, or an ASA working in health insurance, plus at least five years in actuarial or data science work and two in ratemaking. Where do you stand?

What they are checking: Whether they hold the required credential and ratemaking experience, because this role assumes independent actuarial judgment from day one.
