Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

What experience do you have handling rabbits, rodents, reptiles or birds, and which ones are you least comfortable with?

What they are checking: Whether they are honest about gaps, since exotic species can be injured or killed by poor handling.

Tell me about a time you had to keep a clinical space clean and organized when others were not doing their part.

What they are checking: Whether they keep standards up without resentment and raise the issue in a way that fixes it.

Why special species, and what have you done on your own to learn about these animals?

What they are checking: Whether their interest is real and self-driven, since this niche requires ongoing learning.

What would you do

A bird in your hands starts open-mouth breathing during a procedure. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize stress and respiratory distress in birds and stop the procedure rather than push through.

A veterinary student wants to practice restraint on a patient you think is too stressed. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they put patient welfare first while still supporting the teaching mission of the hospital.

An owner gets upset because their bird was in the hospital longer than expected. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they stay calm with owners and pass medical questions to the clinician without making promises.

About the work

How would you restrain a rabbit for an exam, and what is the main risk you are trying to avoid?

What they are checking: Whether they know rabbits can fracture their spine by kicking, the classic mistake new handlers make.

What do you know about the heat, light and humidity needs of reptile patients while they are in the hospital?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that housing is part of treatment for reptiles, not just a place to keep them.

How would you set up an exam room before a clinician sees a small, fragile patient like a hamster or a finch?

What they are checking: Whether they think ahead about escape routes, warmth and having supplies ready so handling time stays short.

Exotic patients often hide illness. What signs would make you tell a nurse that a patient in a cage seems off?

What they are checking: Whether they watch closely enough to catch prey species that mask pain until they are very sick.

How do you prepare surgical instruments and supplies so a procedure starts on time?

What they are checking: Whether they understand prep work that keeps surgeons and anesthesia time short for tiny patients.
