Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

You'd identify opportunities to reduce operating cost and cycle time and lead projects to achieve those savings. Tell me about a saving you delivered rather than identified.

What they are checking: Whether they have actually delivered savings through to completion, since identifying opportunities is easy and getting them implemented is the harder, valued part.

How do you report project status to a steering group so they can make a decision?

What they are checking: Whether they frame status around decisions leaders need to make, with clear options and impacts, instead of long reports that hide what actually matters.

What is the first sign a capital project is going to overrun, in your experience?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize early warning signs of overrun from real project experience, which shows they can intervene before problems become expensive to fix.

What would you do

How do you know a project is behind before the schedule says so?

What they are checking: Whether they watch leading indicators like late deliverables and slipping procurement, so they can warn leaders before the schedule officially shows a delay.

You'd own documentation. Why does documentation matter on a capital project in this industry?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that regulated plants need complete, accurate documentation for qualification and inspections, so poor records can delay startup and approval.

A sub-team lead tells you their part is on track and you do not believe it. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they verify status with evidence and direct conversation rather than accepting optimistic reports, because hidden delays surface later at much higher cost.

How do you handle a change that adds cost but is genuinely needed?

What they are checking: Whether they can approve justified changes with clear reasoning and documented impact, rather than either blocking every change or letting scope grow unchecked.

This is one of five transformation roles posted at once on the same capital project — this one plus engineering, automation, process and qualification leads. How would the five of you work together, and why this seat?

What they are checking: Understanding the whole set plus a real reason for this one

About the work

This role leads the cost, schedule and documentation sub-team on a strategic capital project. Walk me through controlling cost and schedule on a project of that kind.

What they are checking: Whether they have owned cost, schedule and document control on a capital project, using baselines and forecasts to steer decisions rather than only report.

How do you build a schedule for a capital project that will actually hold?

What they are checking: Whether they build schedules from real durations, dependencies and input from the people doing the work, so the plan holds when conditions change.
