Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you had a line of impatient customers and something slowed you down. How did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they stay accurate and courteous under time pressure, since mistakes at the window cost both money and trust.

How do you stay accurate when you're processing deposits, withdrawals and check cashing all day long?

What they are checking: Whether they have concrete habits like counting back and double-checking amounts that keep errors from reaching the customer.

Tell me about a time you went out of your way to fix a problem for a customer.

What they are checking: Whether they take ownership of a customer's issue rather than passing it along, which is what builds branch loyalty.

How comfortable are you with being measured on referrals as well as service, and why?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that the teller role includes identifying banking opportunities and are at ease with that expectation.

Many of our branches serve customers who speak Urdu, Hindi, Arabic or other languages. How have you helped customers when there was a language gap?

What they are checking: Whether they show patience and respect with every customer and use the resources available to communicate clearly.

What would you do

A customer cashing a check mentions they're paying a lot in ATM fees at another bank. What do you say?

What they are checking: Whether they notice natural openings in a transaction and make a helpful referral without pressuring the customer.

An elderly customer wants to withdraw a large amount of cash and seems nervous, with someone waiting outside. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize possible elder financial exploitation and know to slow down and involve a manager respectfully.

Part of this job is showing customers other ways to bank, like the mobile app or ATM. How would you bring that up without making them feel pushed away?

What they are checking: Whether they can educate customers on alternatives in a way that feels like help rather than being turned away from the window.

Someone presents a check that looks altered and gets angry when you say you need to verify it. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they follow fraud-prevention procedures calmly and firmly even when the customer pushes back.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd balance your cash drawer at the end of the day, and what you'd do if you were short twenty dollars.

What they are checking: Whether they handle cash with care and report discrepancies honestly instead of trying to quietly cover them.
