Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a technical memo you wrote. Who read it, and what did it need to accomplish?

What they are checking: Whether they write clearly for the reader, which matters when memos support positions under examination.

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a manager or partner on a technical conclusion.

How do you stay current on new corporate tax guidance, like proposed regulations and IRS notices?

How do you mentor staff who come to you with corporate tax questions?

What they are checking: Whether they teach the reasoning behind an answer so the team gets stronger over time.

What would you do

Because National Tax supports local offices, an engagement team asks you for an answer by tomorrow on a question that really needs a week. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can set honest expectations with internal clients without being dismissive or overpromising.

How would you explain the tax effect of a corporate restructuring to a CFO who isn't a tax person?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate technical analysis into a business decision a non-specialist can act on.

About the work

Walk me through the main steps of an ASC 740 income tax provision, from current tax to the deferred rollforward.

What they are checking: Whether they can do provision work accurately, which is central to a corporate tax role in a national tax group.

How do you research a corporate tax question when there's no clear answer in the code, and how do you write up your conclusion?

What they are checking: Whether they can build a supportable position from regulations, rulings and case law, which national tax work depends on.

Explain how Section 163(j) interest limitation works and when it matters to a client.

What they are checking: Whether they know a commonly tested corporate provision well enough to spot it in a client's facts.

How do consolidated return rules change the way you think about a corporate group's tax position?

What they are checking: Their depth with consolidated groups, which is where many complex corporate questions come from.
