Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you were the technical link between sales and a customer's engineering team.

What they are checking: Whether they can speak to both sides honestly, helping win orders without overselling.

Tell me about a mistake on a controls project and how you fixed it.

What they are checking: Whether they own errors and learn from them, which matters on low to medium complexity design work.

How do you handle long stretches on site at a mill, away from home?

What they are checking: Whether they are ready for the site coverage that commissioning and tuning require.

What would you do

During startup, operators do not trust the new controls and keep switching to manual. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can win operator trust through training and results, since controls only help when used.

A mill manager wants quick results, but the tuning needs more time to be stable. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they can manage customer pressure while protecting the quality of the result.

About the work

What is a quality control system on a paper machine, and what does it measure and control?

What they are checking: Whether they understand QCS basics like basis weight, moisture and caliper control across the sheet.

Walk me through how you would tune a cross-direction or machine-direction control loop on a paper machine.

What they are checking: Whether they have practical process control tuning knowledge, which is central to the systems engineer duties.

How would you collect baseline performance data from a competitor's system to support a performance guarantee?

What they are checking: Whether they can gather fair, defensible data so ABB does not promise results it cannot deliver.

How would you put together a systems engineering plan for a site, including tuning and operator training?

What they are checking: Whether they can plan the order and duration of tasks, which is expected when they hold the lead role.

What do you check before you release system software for internal integration testing?

What they are checking: Whether they are careful about configuration and testing so problems are caught before the mill.
