Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a customer changed requirements after your drawings were released. How did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can manage change orders calmly and protect schedule and cost without making the customer feel blamed.

Tell me about a design mistake of yours that made it to production. What did you change afterward?

What they are checking: Whether they own errors plainly and fix the process behind them, which matters when a mistake can hurt someone.

What would you do

The shop floor calls to say a door layout you designed can't be wired the way you drew it. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they go see the problem in person and treat assembly feedback as useful rather than defending the drawing.

You have three projects due the same week and one customer is pushing hard. How do you plan the week?

What they are checking: Whether they can prioritize by real impact and communicate early instead of quietly letting a due date slip.

About the work

Walk me through a switchgear or paralleling lineup you designed, from the customer's one-line diagram to released drawings.

What they are checking: Whether they have owned a full design cycle or only drafted pieces someone else specified and checked.

How do you size the bus and pick the short-circuit rating for a lineup when the utility fault current is still uncertain?

What they are checking: Whether they design conservatively around unknowns instead of guessing low and hoping the study comes back in their favor.

Our switchgear often ties generators to the utility. What changes in your design when you go from open transition to closed transition transfer?

What they are checking: Whether they understand synchronizing, protection and utility interconnect rules that come with paralleling generators to the grid.

Which standards do you design switchgear to, and how do you check a design against them before it goes to the shop?

What they are checking: Whether compliance with UL and NEC style requirements is built into their process or left for the inspector to catch.

How do you decide on breaker types, controls and metering for a lineup feeding a hospital or data center backup system?

What they are checking: Whether they connect component choices to the reliability needs of critical power customers rather than picking from habit.

How do you keep arc flash and electrical safety in mind while you design, not just while you test?

What they are checking: Whether they treat the people who build, test and service the gear as part of the design brief, fitting a zero-harm culture.

What CAD and electrical design tools have you used, and how do you keep the bill of materials in sync with the drawings?

What they are checking: Whether they have the tool fluency and discipline that stops wrong parts from being ordered and built.
