Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time your analysis changed a design decision. What convinced the team?

What they are checking: Whether their work has had real influence, not just produced reports that sat unread.

How do you build sustainability knowledge across a design team so it doesn't depend on you being in the room?

What they are checking: Whether they can scale their expertise through tools, training and standards.

How do you keep up with fast-moving research and codes in this field?

What they are checking: Whether they keep their knowledge current in an area where standards change every year.

What would you do

A design lead sees sustainability targets as a constraint on the concept. How do you work with them?

What they are checking: Whether they can frame performance as part of good design rather than a set of rules.

The client wants net zero but the budget won't support it. How do you advise them?

What they are checking: Whether they can give honest options and tradeoffs rather than promising what the budget cannot deliver.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd run an early energy and daylight study for a design team that hasn't picked a massing yet.

What they are checking: Whether they can influence design early, when sustainability decisions are cheapest and matter most.

Which simulation tools have you used, like Ladybug, IES, EnergyPlus or cove.tool, and how do you check the results are believable?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the assumptions behind the models instead of trusting outputs blindly.

How do you calculate or estimate embodied carbon, and how do you present it so designers act on it?

What they are checking: Whether they can turn carbon numbers into design choices people will actually make.

What certification systems have you managed, like LEED, WELL or Living Building Challenge, and what's tricky about them?

What they are checking: Whether they have handled real certification paperwork and know where projects lose credits.

How do you think about climate resilience, like heat, flooding and storms, alongside operational energy?

What they are checking: Whether their view of sustainability includes adapting to climate change, not only reducing energy use.
