What they are checking: Composure and focus in high-stakes, unplanned surgery.

There's a $20,000 sign-on bonus for this role. What would make you stay on call here for years?

What they are checking: Motivation beyond the bonus, since call roles can burn people out quickly.

What would you do

You arrive and the tray you need has a hole in the wrap. What do you do?

What they are checking: Refusal to use a compromised tray and quick problem solving to get a sterile replacement.

The night circulator is new and unsure of the setup for a case. How do you help without taking over?

What they are checking: Teamwork and quiet leadership with a small after-hours crew.

About the work

You get called in at 2 a.m. for an emergency ex-lap. Walk me through what you do from the moment you arrive.

What they are checking: Speed and order in opening and setting up for an urgent general surgery case.

How do you set up for an urgent ortho case, like a hip fracture, when the rep isn't there yet?

What they are checking: Knowledge of ortho trays, implants and power equipment without leaning on a vendor.

How do you keep counts accurate in an emergency when everyone is rushing?

What they are checking: Discipline about counts that holds even when the case is chaotic.
