Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

How do you develop a data steward into someone who makes good judgment calls?

What they are checking: Whether they coach stewards to understand the reasons behind the rules, so they can handle unusual requests well instead of escalating everything they see.

What would you do

You'd define and enforce global customer data standards and stewardship practices. How do you enforce a standard across regions that each have reasons to differ?

What they are checking: Whether they can set global standards while hearing legitimate regional needs, because rigid rules get worked around and loose ones never actually hold.

You'd oversee the stewardship platform's operating model — intake, validation, approvals, escalation. How do you keep a request queue moving without letting bad data through?

What they are checking: Whether they can design intake, validation and approvals so requests move fast, since slow queues push teams to bypass the process and enter bad data.

You'd be the senior point of contact across customer service, supply chain, pricing, finance, commercial and technology. How do you settle a disagreement between two of those about a data rule?

What they are checking: Whether they can settle data disputes between functions using business impact and clear decision rights, rather than whoever argues loudest or ranks highest.

You'd balance global standardization with operational agility. Give me an example where you would allow an exception.

What they are checking: Whether they can grant a reasoned, documented exception when the business case is real, showing judgment instead of applying standards without thinking.

This is based at North Chicago in finance shared services supporting the order to cash process. What would you want to know about the current data quality and the team before you took it?

What they are checking: Whether they ask about current data quality, team skills and known problem areas before taking the role, since inherited issues shape the whole first year.

About the work

This role leads customer master data governance across an enterprise system landscape within finance shared services. What master data work have you led?

What they are checking: Whether they have led customer master data governance, not just entered records, since this role sets standards and directs others across a large enterprise landscape.

What actually goes wrong when customer master data is bad, downstream in order to cash?

What they are checking: Whether they can trace bad customer data to failed deliveries, wrong pricing, blocked invoices and slow collections, which is why the role exists at all.

How do you measure data quality in a way that drives action rather than reporting?

What they are checking: Whether they tie data quality metrics to owners and downstream impact, because dashboards that nobody acts on do not actually improve the data.

How do you clean up a master data set that has years of accumulated problems in it?

What they are checking: Whether they can prioritize cleanup by business impact and fix the root causes, so years of bad data are corrected and do not quietly return.
