Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

How do you develop security test engineers who are strong technically but have never led anything?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real plan for growing people, since this role is about building a team.

Tell me about a time a product development team pushed back on a security finding as not realistic. How did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can win the argument with evidence and partnership instead of authority.

How do you balance hands-on technical work with your duties as a people leader?

What they are checking: Whether they can step back from doing the testing themselves and still stay credible with their engineers.

What product security research have you done or led, and how did it feed back into the products?

What they are checking: Whether research in their past turned into fixes and design changes, not just reports.

What would you do

Your team finds a serious vulnerability two weeks before a product launch. What happens next, and who do you bring in?

What they are checking: Whether they can handle a release-blocking finding calmly and route it through development and disclosure properly.

How do you decide how deep to test when your team has more products to cover than time to cover them?

What they are checking: Whether they prioritize by real risk and exposure instead of spreading effort evenly.

About the work

You will lead security testing of industrial control system products, embedded devices and communication technologies. How is testing an ICS product different from testing a typical IT application?

What they are checking: Whether they understand OT constraints like availability, legacy protocols and safety impact that change how you test.

Walk me through how you would plan a penetration test on a new embedded controller before it ships.

What they are checking: Whether they can scope attack surface, pick methods and sequence work on a real product, not just run tools.

How have you used fuzz testing on industrial protocols or embedded firmware, and what did it find?

What they are checking: Whether they have hands-on fuzzing experience and know how to turn crashes into real findings.

Where does security automation fit in a test program like this, and what would you automate first?

What they are checking: Whether they can pick high-value automation that scales a small team's coverage across many products.

How do standards like IEC 62443 shape the security verification work you have done?

What they are checking: Whether they know the industrial security standards customers and certifiers expect products to meet.
