About your past

Tell me about a time you used Excel or a similar tool to answer a question someone actually needed answered.

What they are checking: Whether they can tie analysis to a real decision rather than producing numbers for their own sake.

HR data includes salaries and personal details. How would you handle that data on a day-to-day basis?

What they are checking: Whether they already think carefully about confidentiality, which is a firm expectation in HR analytics.

A manager asks for a report on their team that would reveal individual pay to people who shouldn't see it. What do you do?

You notice two reports show different headcounts for the same month. How do you find out why?

What they are checking: Whether they reconcile by checking definitions, dates and filters before assuming a system error.

About the work

What does an HR analytics and HRIS team do, and how is it different from the rest of HR?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the data and systems side of HR rather than picturing a recruiting role.

Have you used Workday or another HR system? What did you do in it?

What they are checking: Whether they have any exposure to HRIS, since OCC runs its people processes through Workday.

How would you calculate employee turnover for a year, and what choices change the number?

What they are checking: Whether they know metrics depend on definitions like voluntary versus total and average headcount.

How would you build a simple dashboard for HR leaders on hiring and retention, and what would go on it?

What they are checking: Whether they choose a few meaningful measures instead of crowding a dashboard with everything available.
