Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you led a group activity that didn't go as planned. How did you adjust?

What they are checking: Whether they stay flexible and calm when real people don't follow the plan.

What draws you to experiential therapy over other kinds of clinical work?

What they are checking: Whether their interest is grounded in real experience and a clear sense of what the work involves.

What would you do

In the middle of a group initiative, one patient shuts down and walks to the corner. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can attend to one person without losing the rest of the group or forcing participation.

How do you build rapport with patients while keeping professional boundaries, especially in fun, active settings like sports or dance?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that relaxed activities still require clear boundaries in a psychiatric setting.

A patient makes a piece of art that seems to show thoughts of self-harm. What's your next step?

What they are checking: Whether they know to treat it as a safety concern and report it promptly instead of interpreting it alone.

About the work

Pick one experiential activity you'd run, like a ropes element, art group or horticulture, and tell me the therapeutic goal behind it.

What they are checking: Whether they can tie an activity to a treatment goal instead of treating it as recreation.

How would you plan a group for adolescents in residential care differently than one for adults in a partial hospitalization program?

What they are checking: Whether they adapt programming to age, acuity and level of care.

What safety checks would you do before running an outdoor or challenge course activity with psychiatric patients?

What they are checking: Whether they think about physical and emotional safety, including sharps, elopement risk and medical limits.

How would you document an experiential session so the rest of the treatment team finds it useful?

What they are checking: Whether they can turn what they observed into clinical notes that link behavior to treatment goals.

Rogers uses cognitive behavioral therapies across its programs. How could an expressive activity support CBT work a patient is doing elsewhere?

What they are checking: Whether they see experiential therapy as part of the larger treatment plan rather than separate from it.
