Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

You'd collaborate with academic and industry partners on study design. How do you tell a partner their proposed design will not give them the answer they want?

What they are checking: Whether they can tell partners honestly that a design will not work, while helping them find a better approach to their question.

What would you do

How do you decide a run's quality control has failed and the data cannot be reported?

What they are checking: Whether they will reject a failed run even under pressure, since reporting bad data affects every decision made from it.

You'd run daily sample testing and reporting for clinical trials, Monday through Friday. What happens when an instrument goes down on a reporting day?

What they are checking: Whether they can keep a daily clinical service running through instrument failures, communicating early and using backup plans to meet deadlines.

The posting requires a doctorate with two to five years of experience and prefers mass spectrometry work in a regulated clinical environment. Where do you sit, and what would you want to know about the instrument suite before you took it?

What they are checking: Whether they meet the stated qualifications and ask about instruments and workload, which shows they understand what the lab needs.

About the work

This role runs targeted and untargeted metabolomics on liquid and gas chromatography mass spectrometry instruments. Walk me through a method you developed from scratch.

What they are checking: Whether they have built a method from scratch, since developing reliable assays is the main technical skill this role requires.

You'd maintain and troubleshoot the instruments. What goes wrong most often, and how do you tell an instrument problem from a sample problem?

What they are checking: Whether they have hands-on troubleshooting experience and can separate instrument faults from sample problems, which keeps runs on schedule.

The posting names developing quantitative same-day blood and stool assays for a clinically licensed and accredited laboratory. What changes when a method has to run under clinical quality standards rather than for research?

What they are checking: The regulated setting, which is the hard part of this job

You'd author standard operating procedures covering sample handling, data collection, quality control validation and instrument logs. How do you write one that holds up when you are not there?

What they are checking: Whether they write procedures clear enough for others to follow exactly, so the lab passes audits and survives staff changes.

The posting names supporting structural elucidation of unknown compounds. Walk me through how you approach an unknown peak.

What they are checking: Whether they have real experience identifying unknown compounds, which requires deep knowledge of spectra and careful confirmation of results.

This group studies how the microbiome influences disease. What is difficult about measuring microbially derived metabolites in complex samples?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the difficulties of measuring microbial metabolites in complex samples, showing real experience in this research area.

The full job description

As published by University of Chicago.

Department BSD DFI - Metabolomics About the Department The Duchossois Family Institute (DFI) studies how the microbiome influences susceptibility to infectious, inflammatory, and autoimmune disease. Using a multi-omic approach and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, the DFI identified and characterizes gut metabolites to understand microbe-microbe and host-microbe interactions. The team supports the University of Chicago and external researcher through experimental design, custom analyses, and data visualization, while also developing rapid, same-day quantitative assays to help clinicians assess gut microbiome health in clinical settings. The DFI partners with The University of Chicago Advanced Technology (UCAT) Laboratory, a CLIA-licensed, CAP-accredited clinical lab within the Department of Pathology specializing in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Together, they develop, validate, and deliver same-day, mass spectrometry-based diagnostics that translate microbiome science into actionable patient care. Job Summary The job facilitates and promotes a research project or contributes to the scientific direction of a research resource. Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction. The Staff Scientist - Metabolomics will collaborate with a dynamic team of scientists, clinicians, and industry partners on cutting-edge metabolomics research — designing studies, performing targeted and untargeted LC and GC-MS experiments, elucidating unknown compounds, and contributing to publications. On the clinical side, the Staff Scientist – Metabolomics will develop and validate quantitative same-day assays in a CLIA-licensed, CAP-accredited lab, translating microbiome science into actionable diagnostics for patients enrolled in clinical trials. Responsibilities • Collaborate with internal teams, academic/industry partners, and UChicago clinical staff on study design and data interpretation. • Maintain and troubleshoot LC and GC-MS instruments; perform targeted and untargeted metabolomics experiments. • Support structural elucidation of unknown compounds; and contribute to data analysis, visualizations, and manuscripts as needed. • Develop quantitative same-day blood and fecal assays for a CLIA/CAP clinical lab. • Author SOPs covering sample handling, data collection, QC validation, and instrumentation logs; maintain reagents, solvents, calibrators, and QC materials. • Enforce BSL-2 and chemical safety protocols; execute daily (Mon–Fri) sample testing and data reporting for clinical trials; and coordinate sample logistics and results communication with clinical and DFI teams. • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Contributes to facilitating and promoting a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information. • Reviews laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage complex data sets for research. • Leads the contributions to scientific writing and publications, including protocols and grants. • Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field. Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
