Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a fermentation you scaled from bench to pilot. What changed at scale?

What they are checking: Whether they have real scale-up experience and understand oxygen, mixing and temperature effects.

Tell me about a time you worked with an external scientific collaborator. How did you keep it useful?

What they are checking: Whether they manage outside research toward business goals.

How do you stay productive when a project has no clear answer yet?

What they are checking: Whether they are comfortable with ambiguity, which the posting names directly.

What would you do

Operations wants a quick answer on a deviation, but your data isn't complete. What do you tell them?

What they are checking: Whether they give a sound interim recommendation and are clear about uncertainty.

How do you explain a microbiology finding to procurement or regulatory partners?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate science into recommendations for non-scientists.

About the work

A dairy starter culture batch shows slow acid development. How would you diagnose it?

What they are checking: Whether they can sort out microbial, process and equipment causes in culture production.

What factors affect starter culture stability and strain behavior under manufacturing conditions?

What they are checking: Whether they understand culture biology well enough to advise plants.

How do you prevent and detect bacteriophage problems in a culture or cheese operation?

What they are checking: Whether they know phage risks and controls, which are critical in dairy fermentation.

How would you design a research project to test a new fermentation approach?

What they are checking: Whether they can frame clear hypotheses and plan experiments with good controls.

What aseptic technique and lab safety habits do you insist on?
