Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role is the finance business partner to a North America sales organization in Mount Prospect. Walk me through partnering with a sales leader on their numbers.

What they are checking: Whether they challenge and guide sales leaders on their numbers, because this role exists to shape decisions, not only produce reports.

You'd lead forecast reviews and leadership presentations, communicating risks and opportunities. How do you present a miss?

What they are checking: Whether they can present a miss clearly with causes and actions, because sales leadership needs honest bad news delivered calmly and early.

How do you earn enough credibility with a sales team that they tell you things early?

What they are checking: Access to information, the real currency of a business partner

What would you do

You'd lead the sales forecasting process across all customers and business units in the region. How do you build a forecast from sales input you know is optimistic?

What they are checking: Whether they can adjust sales input for known optimism using history and evidence, because forecasts built on hope mislead the whole business.

How do you improve forecast accuracy rather than just measuring it?

What they are checking: Whether they find and fix the causes of forecast error, because measuring accuracy alone never makes the next forecast better.

A customer's volume drops and sales says it is timing. How do you decide whether to believe that?

What they are checking: Whether they test sales explanations against data while keeping the relationship, because a business partner still owes finance an independent view.

This is based in Mount Prospect supporting North America sales. What would you want to know about the business units and the reporting calendar before you took it?

What they are checking: Whether they ask about the business units, reporting deadlines and current forecast quality, because that shows they think carefully about scope.

About the work

You'd own the month-end sales reporting including actual performance against forecast, budget and prior year. Which of those comparisons tells you the most, and why?

What they are checking: Whether they know which comparison best explains performance and why, because leaders need insight from finance, not every possible variance.

You'd provide transparency across customers and business units. How do you build reporting a sales leader will actually use?

What they are checking: Whether they design reports around what sales leaders actually need to decide, because unused reporting wastes everyone's time each month.

How do you handle price and volume moving in opposite directions in the same result?

What they are checking: Whether they can separate price, volume and mix effects in a result, because that breakdown is how finance explains what really happened.
