Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time an analyst team asked for data you thought was low value. How did you handle it?
What they are checking: Whether they can push back on low-value data requests while still helping analysts get what they actually need, keeping the platform affordable and trusted.
Tell me about the biggest data quality problem you have fixed in a security platform.
What they are checking: Whether they have personally owned a serious data quality problem through to a fix, which shows depth beyond configuring tools and following runbooks.
What would you do
A detection that fired yesterday stopped firing today. How do you figure out whether the data pipeline is to blame?
What they are checking: Whether they can trace data lineage and check volumes and parsing at each hop, because silent pipeline breaks look exactly like attackers going quiet.
About the work
Walk me through a Cribl pipeline you built. What did it route, filter or reshape before data hit the SIEM?
What they are checking: Hands-on observability pipeline experience, not just familiarity with the name.
Our Splunk license cost is climbing. How would you use Cribl to cut ingest volume without blinding the SOC?
What they are checking: Whether they can cut ingest by filtering, sampling and routing low-value data carefully, without dropping the fields detections and investigations actually depend on.
How do you turn messy, unstructured logs into a normalized dataset that analysts can trust?
What they are checking: Whether they can parse and normalize logs to a common model like CIM, since detections and searches fail quietly when fields are mapped inconsistently.
How have you used a message broker like Kafka in a security data pipeline, and why put it in the middle?
What they are checking: Whether they understand why a broker buffers and decouples sources from destinations, so outages downstream do not lose security events that cannot be recovered.
How would you onboard a new security telemetry source that only offers a REST API?
What they are checking: API integration, polling, auth and getting data into the SIEM reliably.
How do you test a pipeline change before it goes to production so you do not drop or corrupt events?
What they are checking: Whether they test pipeline changes against sample data and compare outputs before release, since a bad change can silently drop events the SOC relies on.
How do you decide what goes to the SIEM, what goes to a data warehouse, and what goes to cheap storage?
What they are checking: Whether they can tier data by how often it is searched and how fast it must be found, balancing detection needs against real storage cost.
