Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
This is a PRN role and you may treat anyone from a toddler to an elderly resident. Which ages are you strongest with, and how do you prepare for the ones you see less often?
What they are checking: Whether they are honest about their range and have a real plan for staying safe and competent across ages.
Tell me about a patient whose progress stalled. How did you change your treatment plan?
What they are checking: Whether they monitor progress and adjust treatment based on data instead of repeating the same plan.
Tell me about a time you worked with OT, PT or nursing to reach a shared goal for a patient.
What they are checking: Whether they coordinate with the rest of the rehab team instead of treating speech therapy as a separate track.
What would you do
You show up for a PRN shift and the caseload includes a patient whose diagnosis you haven't worked with in years. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they know to review, ask colleagues and stay within competence rather than guessing with a patient's safety.
A family insists their father should go back to regular food, but your evaluation shows aspiration risk. How do you handle that conversation?
What they are checking: Whether they can explain risk honestly, respect patient choice and document informed decisions without giving in or lecturing.
About the work
Walk me through how you'd evaluate a patient referred for possible dysphagia after a stroke.
What they are checking: Whether they have a sound swallowing evaluation process and know when to move from bedside screening to instrumental study.
How do you decide on diet texture and liquid consistency recommendations, and how do you make sure nursing actually follows them?
What they are checking: Whether they connect their recommendations to real aspiration risk and follow through so the plan is carried out on the floor.
How do you teach a patient or caregiver to practice exercises at home so they actually do them?
What they are checking: Whether they can coach in plain language and build home practice that fits a person's real life.
What makes your documentation strong enough to support billing and the next therapist who picks up the case?
What they are checking: Whether they document clearly and on time, since as a PRN therapist others depend fully on what they write.
How do you assess cognitive-communication problems in an adult after a brain injury?
What they are checking: Whether they cover the cognitive side of the role, which the posting names alongside speech, language and swallowing.
