Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about something you built on Android that had to talk closely to hardware or firmware. What was the hardest part of that boundary?

What they are checking: Whether they have worked below the app layer, where device quirks and firmware behavior shape the software.

Tell me about a time you debugged a problem that only showed up on certain devices or OS versions.

What they are checking: Patience and method when bugs depend on hardware variation they can't easily reproduce at their desk.

Tell me about a code review where you changed your mind, or got someone else to change theirs.

What they are checking: How they handle technical disagreement on a team at the Software Engineer II level, with openness and evidence.

What would you do

A restaurant's POS terminal needs a critical firmware update, but it's mid-service on a Friday night. How would you design the update flow so it doesn't take the device down at the wrong moment?

What they are checking: Whether they think about the operator's real day, not just whether the update technically installs.

If an update bricks a small percentage of devices in the field, what do you do in the first hour?

What they are checking: Calm incident response: stopping the rollout, scoping the damage and getting customers back up before finding the cause.

An international team wants to deploy their own app to Toast devices in a new market. What questions do you ask before saying yes?

What they are checking: Whether they think about platform boundaries, permissions, localization and support load before opening the platform to others.

About the work

How does Android's device owner or device policy model work, and what can a management app do with it that a normal app can't?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the platform APIs that a Mobile Device Management system is actually built on.

Walk me through how you'd roll out a new on-device app to thousands of POS devices across many locations without breaking any of them.

What they are checking: Staged rollouts, health checks and rollback, which matter far more when every device is someone's register.

How would you secure a fleet of POS devices so a lost or stolen one can't be used to get at customer or payment data?

What they are checking: Whether they connect device security controls like lockdown, remote wipe and encryption to real payment risk.

How would you design out-of-the-box setup so a restaurant owner with no IT help can get a new device running in minutes?

What they are checking: Whether they can make provisioning simple for non-technical users while keeping it secure and remotely managed.

How do you keep background work on a long-running Android device reliable, given Doze, process death and limited memory?

What they are checking: Real knowledge of Android lifecycle and background limits on devices that stay powered on for years.

Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy. At Toast, we are committed to empowering our customers by providing the technology, resources, and community they need to thrive. While our roots are in food service, we are rapidly expanding into adjacent markets and international territories. Our mission is to build a world-class Device Management platform that supports the diverse needs of all Toast customers, regardless of their industry or location. As a member of the Android Systems team, you will bridge the gap between hardware and software to build the foundational platform for Toast POS devices. Whether it’s an international team looking to deploy a new on-device application, a customer needing a critical firmware update, an Enterprise group needing multi-location device tooling - our systems empower customers to set up, secure, and manage their devices from wherever they are. Why this team? • Expanding the Vision : We are expanding our Mobile Device Management ecosystem—unifying firmware, on-device apps, and security controls into one cohesive platform. • Frictionless Device Management : We are transforming the customer’s device lifecycle experience from out-of-the-box setup to continuous remote management, leveraging AI to dramatically reduce operator’s time spent troubleshooting and configuring devices. About this roll* (Responsibilities): • Hands-on design and implementation of Android system applications in Java or Kotlin that power Toast's device management suite, including device policy enforcement, out-of-box device setup, and firmware and app updates. • Build features with a heavier focus on background services than UI, designed to run reliably on devices with little to no user interaction. • Support bring-up of new Toast hardware and OS upgrades by making sure our system apps work as expected on each device type. • Expand our end-to-end automated testing framework using Robot Framework to validate our apps against real Toast hardware and reduce manual regression testing. • Investigate and debug production issues across Toast's device fleet. • Collaborate with Product Management, Hardware, QA, and other Software teams to build scalable systems. • Make solid technical decisions, keeping software quality, security, and maintainability in mind. Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements): • 3+ years of Android application development experience. • Clear written and verbal communication • Proficient in a modern object-oriented programming language such as Java or Kotlin. • Experience with standard Android architecture patterns & libraries such as Hilt, AndroidX libraries, and Kotlin Coroutines. • Experience triaging issues with Android tools such as adb and logcat. • Proficiency with source control and code review tools such as Git, Gerrit, or GitHub. Bonus ingredients*: • Experience writing automated tests using Robot, UIAutomator or other testing frameworks. • Familiarity with AI-augmented development workflows and tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, or similar). • Experience with the Android framework, system services, or system apps written in Kotlin or Java. • Understanding of mobile device management (MDM) concepts and enterprise device management platforms. AI at Toast At Toast, one of our company values is that we're hungry to build and learn.
