Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to lead a SIOP or S&OP meeting where supply and demand were badly out of balance. What did you present and what happened next.

real ownership of the SIOP process versus just attending meetings and reporting numbers

Tell me about a time you had to convince Finance or Procurement to accept a plan that increased cost or inventory in the short term to protect service or working capital longer term.

skill at influencing stakeholders who don't report to you and who have competing incentives

Give me an example of a plant rate or capacity decision you influenced. What data did you bring to that conversation and how did operations respond.

whether they can drive capacity strategy with operations as a partner rather than dictate from a spreadsheet

Tell me about a time you mentored or developed a less experienced planner. What specifically did you work on with them.

genuine coaching capability, since this role is expected to elevate team capability, not just do the work itself

Describe a continuous improvement project you led in planning or supply chain. What was broken, what did you change, and how did you know it worked.

whether improvement work is self-driven and measurable or something that happened around them

Technical

Walk me through how you'd set finished goods inventory targets for a product category when service level, cost, and working capital goals are all pulling in different directions.

whether the candidate can build and defend an inventory strategy grounded in trade-offs, not just follow a formula

Describe a supply plan you built across a 0 to 12 month horizon. How did you handle the near-term execution piece differently from the longer-range strategic piece.

understanding of the difference between S&OE and longer-horizon supply planning, not just theoretical knowledge

How do you decide where to position inventory across a network of plants or distribution points when you're trying to balance responsiveness against cost.

depth of actual inventory optimization knowledge versus buzzword familiarity

What's your experience with SAP or a similar ERP for supply planning, and can you give an example of a planning parameter you changed that made a real difference.

hands-on system fluency and whether they actually tune planning parameters rather than accept defaults

Situational

Say you're integrating a new product launch into an existing supply plan and the plant says they can't hit the ramp schedule without cutting into another product's capacity. How do you work through that.

ability to manage NPI phase-in against constrained capacity and make cross-functional trade-off calls

A key supplier tells you they're going to be short on a critical component for the next two months, right as you're phasing out an old product and phasing in a new one. What do you do first.

prioritization instinct and risk mitigation approach when multiple pressures hit at once

How would you present a supply risk and its trade-offs to senior leadership if the recommendation you believed in wasn't going to be popular.

comfort delivering executive-ready, sometimes unwelcome recommendations rather than softening the message
