Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time your deferred revenue or unbilled receivable balance did not reconcile. How did you find the cause?

What they are checking: How they trace a reconciliation gap to its root and whether they fix the process, not just the number.

Tell me about a time you had to explain a technical revenue position to external auditors who disagreed with you.

What they are checking: Whether they can document and defend a judgment call calmly with evidence instead of folding or getting defensive.

Describe a process or control you built or improved in a revenue team. What changed because of it?

What they are checking: Whether they improve how the team works as it scales, which is what a senior accountant is hired to do.

What would you do

How do you work with Deal Desk and Sales so problem terms get caught before signature instead of at month-end?

What they are checking: Whether they prevent revenue problems upstream by building trust with deal teams instead of only cleaning up afterward.

AlphaSense acquired Tegus in 2024. What revenue accounting problems would you expect when two companies with different contracts and systems come together?

What they are checking: Whether they anticipate policy alignment, system migration and contract harmonization issues that follow an acquisition.

FP&A asks you why recognized revenue came in below bookings this quarter. How do you explain it to someone who is not an accountant?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate deferral and timing concepts into plain business language for partners who plan from those numbers.

About the work

Walk me through how you apply the five steps of ASC 606 to a multi-year SaaS subscription that includes a content add-on and a ramped price.

What they are checking: Whether they can apply revenue rules to messy real contracts rather than reciting the five steps from memory.

A rep closes a deal with a non-standard clause, like a termination for convenience or a free extra month. How do you figure out whether it changes the revenue treatment?

What they are checking: Whether they read contract terms for their accounting effect and know which clauses quietly change the contract term or price.

How would you allocate the transaction price when a customer buys the platform plus expert call credits and the standalone selling prices are not obvious?

What they are checking: Whether they understand standalone selling price estimation and can defend a reasonable method to auditors.

Walk me through your month-end close for revenue. Which steps would you automate first if you could?

What they are checking: Whether they know their close well enough to see where time and errors pile up and how to remove them.

How do you handle usage-based or consumption pricing when the usage data comes from a product system you do not control?

What they are checking: Whether they think about data controls and source reliability when revenue depends on numbers from outside finance.
