Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a complex institutional client you grew over time. What did you do that made the relationship deeper?

What they are checking: Evidence of real trusted-advisor work rather than order taking, with a concrete link to expanded business.

Tell me about a time a client was unhappy with performance or service. How did you turn it around?

What they are checking: Ownership and follow-through when a relationship is at risk, including coordinating fixes across internal teams.

Describe a time you worked with trading, operations or legal to deliver something a client needed.

What they are checking: Ability to pull internal partners together, since a relationship manager rarely controls every piece of delivery.

What would you do

How would you explain the risk and return of a securities lending program to a pension fund trustee who's skeptical about it?

What they are checking: Ability to describe borrower default, collateral reinvestment risk and indemnification plainly to a cautious fiduciary.

A client wants to tighten collateral guidelines in a way that will cut their revenue noticeably. How do you handle that conversation?

What they are checking: Whether they respect the client's risk appetite while making the trade-off clear with numbers, not pressure.

How do you decide which clients in your portfolio get the most of your time?

What they are checking: Judgment in balancing revenue, risk and growth potential across a book of complex clients.

A prospect compares you with a third-party lending agent offering a better fee split. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they can compete on total value and risk management without dismissing a fair competitive point.

About the work

Walk me through the main levers that drive lending revenue for a client's portfolio.

What they are checking: Understanding of utilization, fee spreads, hard-to-borrow demand and reinvestment returns, and how client choices affect each.

How do proxy voting and recalls interact with a lending program, and how have you handled a client who needed shares back quickly?

What they are checking: Practical knowledge of recall mechanics and governance concerns that often worry institutional lenders.

What market or regulatory changes are affecting securities lending right now, and how would you talk to clients about them?

What they are checking: Whether they stay current on the industry and can turn developments into useful client conversations.
