Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you took a messy underwriting or claims dataset and turned it into a story that changed a leader's decision.

whether the candidate can move from raw data to a business narrative, not just build charts

Tell me about a time you found a performance issue in a class or segment before anyone else noticed. How did you find it and what did you do next?

proactive analytical instinct and ownership of book performance, not just reactive reporting

Tell me about a time your analysis showed something leadership didn't want to hear. How did you present it?

courage and tact in delivering unwelcome insights to senior stakeholders

Describe a dashboard or report you built that people kept coming back to. What made it stick versus something that got ignored?

understanding of what makes reporting genuinely useful to stakeholders versus just technically correct

Tell me about a time you had to explain a complex analytical finding to someone without a data background. How did you adjust your explanation?

communication skill across technical and non-technical audiences

Technical

How would you pull together data on capacity, financial results, and operational metrics when they live in different systems and aren't structured the same way?

comfort connecting disparate data domains, which is central to this role

Walk me through how you'd build a query in BigQuery to compare loss ratio trends across segments, and how you'd decide what to visualize in Tableau versus a written summary.

hands-on fluency with the specific tools listed and judgment about presentation format

What underwriting guidelines or compliance concepts have you had to factor into an analysis, and how did that shape what you built?

real depth of P&C underwriting knowledge versus generic data analyst background

What's your process for checking that a report or analysis is accurate before you send it up to leadership?

rigor and discipline around data integrity, called out explicitly in the posting

What Excel techniques or functions do you rely on most when building performance dashboards, and when would you push a piece of work into Tableau or Data Studio instead?

practical tool fluency and judgment about when a spreadsheet is enough versus when it isn't

Situational

Say you're given underwriting profit and growth data that seem to contradict each other for the same segment. How would you dig into that and what would you tell leadership?

ability to frame tradeoffs and communicate nuance rather than just report a number

Imagine you're leading a project to track progress on an underwriting initiative across multiple teams, and one team isn't providing clean data. What do you do?

project leadership and ability to enforce data integrity without direct authority

If two underwriting leaders disagree about what's driving a drop in profitability in a segment, how would you use data to help them reach a decision rather than just adding a third opinion?

skill at using data as a neutral arbiter in stakeholder conflict
