Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a subscription product you've launched or evolved end to end - pricing, packaging, entitlements, the whole thing. What tradeoffs did you have to make?

whether they have real, specific experience shaping subscription mechanics rather than just talking about growth in the abstract

Tell me about a time you had to make a decision that balanced customer value against revenue and operational complexity. How did you decide, and who pushed back?

their ability to actually own tradeoffs across competing interests, not just describe a framework

Tell me about a time you had to say no to an engineering team, or push back on a technical constraint, because it didn't serve the customer or business outcome.

whether they can hold their ground with technical stakeholders without burning the relationship

Describe the most ambiguous problem space you've owned as a PM. How did you bring structure to it when there was no clear brief?

comfort operating as a senior IC in genuine ambiguity, which this role demands given the parental-leave coverage and cross-functional scope

Tell me about a product launch that didn't go the way you expected. What did you miss, and what did you do about it once you saw the data?

self-awareness and whether they iterate on evidence rather than defend the original plan

Tell me about a time you had to build trust quickly with a team you were new to, especially engineering or design, in order to get something shipped.

how they'll ramp into a 12-month contract covering someone else's team without a long runway to build rapport

Technical

How would you design an experiment to test a new onboarding flow for a smart camera, where success is measured by activation and eventual subscription conversion, not just app opens?

whether they know how to define metrics that actually tie to business outcomes rather than vanity engagement numbers

How do you think about the difference between a device capability and the customer value it should translate into? Give me an example from your own work.

systems thinking at the intersection of hardware and service, which is the core intellectual demand of this specific role

What data would you want on day one to understand the health of ecobee's Smart Security subscription business, and what would you do if that data didn't exist yet?

analytical maturity and pragmatism when instrumentation is incomplete, a common reality in a growing device-plus-service business

Situational

Say we want to increase attach rate for professional monitoring on our security cameras. How would you approach figuring out where the drop-off is happening and what to fix first?

structured product discovery instinct and comfort connecting funnel data to device and service experience

You've never built a hardware product before, or you have limited experience with it. How would you get up to speed on the constraints of firmware and device teams fast enough to make good roadmap calls?

honesty about gaps and a credible plan for closing them, since the role explicitly allows for hardware curiosity over deep hardware background

Picture a renewal or migration for an existing subscription tier that could upset a segment of current customers even though it improves margins. How do you navigate that with Legal, Finance, and Customer Support all in the room?

cross-functional negotiation skill specifically in a subscription lifecycle context involving compliance and legal risk

If you had to prioritize between a feature that improves activation for new customers and one that improves retention for existing subscribers, and you could only ship one this quarter, how would you decide?

prioritization logic under real resource constraints, tied to the activation-engagement-subscription funnel this role owns

Who You'll be Joining: Our hive, headquartered in Toronto, is looking for a Senior Product Manager to help lead the evolution of ecobee’s Smart Security business – shaping how our devices and services come together to deliver a seamless, high-value customer experience. Our Smart Security business is building a holistic home monitoring portfolio: doorbells, cameras, sensors, and security services and features (including professional monitoring) that are powered by a scalable platform and ecosystem. You will bring deep experience in building and shipping hardware products, alongside a strong understanding of how those devices power differentiated service experiences. You’ll partner closely with Hardware Engineering, Firmware, Mobile, Backend, Design, Data, and go-to-market teams to define and deliver integrated solutions that drive both customer value and business outcomes – especially across activation, engagement, and subscription growth. You’ll operate as a senior product leader – owning complex, cross-functional problem spaces, setting direction across devices and services, and driving clarity in ambiguous, high-stakes decisions. This role sits at the intersection of physical products and digital experiences, requiring strong systems thinking and the ability to connect technical capabilities to customer and commercial impact. At ecobee, Product Managers are expected to operate as builders, storytellers, and stewards of the business: we stay deeply connected to customer needs and delivery realities, we clarify and communicate the value of what we’re building, and we take ownership for outcomes over the full product lifecycle. [For Toronto/GTA Candidates only] This role follows a hybrid schedule, with in-office work required on Wednesdays and Thursdays to support collaboration, and flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the week. What You’ll Bring to the Table: • 4–7+ years of product management experience, with a strong foundation in digital products, services, or growth-focused roles . • Demonstrated ability (or strong interest) in working across both services and devices , with curiosity to learn hardware-driven product development. • Proven experience designing, launching, or evolving subscription models, including pricing, packaging, entitlements, migrations, renewals, and lifecycle management. • Strong cross functional leadership skills, with experience partnering closely with Engineering, Design, Legal, Finance, Data, and Customer Support. • Demonstrated ability to make trade offs between customer value, revenue, compliance, and operational complexity in subscription or services contexts. • Strong analytical skills – comfortable using data to inform decisions and measure success. • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment with evolving priorities. • Growth mindset – eager to learn, take on new challenges, and expand scope over time as the business evolves. • Bonus: Experience working on hardware or device-integrated products (e.g., IoT, consumer electronics, connected devices).
