Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a business team saw governance as a blocker. How did you change their mind?

What they are checking: Whether they can show governance adds value instead of just enforcing rules on reluctant teams.

Describe a policy or process you built from scratch. How did you get people to follow it?

What they are checking: Whether they can move from strategy to day-to-day execution, which this role says it leans on.

What would you do

You're taking over the Data Domain Model. How would you make sure every domain has a clear owner who actually acts like one?

What they are checking: Whether they know that ownership on paper means nothing unless owners have real duties and get held to them.

How would you run a Data Governance Council so it makes decisions instead of becoming a status meeting?

What they are checking: Whether they can design agendas, decision rights and follow-through that keep senior people engaged.

Two teams define a key metric like active customer differently and both dashboards are used by executives. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can resolve a definitional conflict through the right forum without picking a side arbitrarily.

How would you handle a request to give a team access to sensitive customer or payment data for an analysis?

What they are checking: Whether they balance compliance and privacy with the business need instead of saying yes or no by reflex.

How do you prioritize governance work when every domain has gaps and you can't fix them all at once?

What they are checking: Whether they focus on the data that drives the most important decisions and risks first.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd set up metadata standards in a data catalog so people can find and trust the data they need.

What they are checking: Whether they have hands-on catalog experience and understand what makes metadata useful rather than just complete.

As AI becomes central at Toast, what governance questions come up that didn't matter as much before?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how training and model use raise new issues around lineage, consent and data quality.

How do you measure whether a data governance program is working?

What they are checking: Whether they track outcomes like trust and adoption, not just counts of policies written or assets cataloged.

The full job description

As published by Toast.

Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy. The Enterprise Data Solutions (EDS) team at Toast is on a mission to deliver a trusted, scalable, and governed data foundation that empowers every team at Toast to make decisions with speed and confidence. As Toast scales and AI becomes central to our product and operational strategy, EDS serves as the engine behind that ambition—building the infrastructure, governance frameworks, and data products every business function depends on. As a Senior Data Governance Product Manager, you will be the primary operational executor within EDS's governance function. Reporting directly to the Director of Enterprise Data Governance, you will build and run the policies, processes, and programs that make Toast's data trustworthy, compliant, and discoverable every day. This role is ideal for someone who is equally comfortable running a cross-functional workshop with business stakeholders and configuring metadata standards in a data catalog—combining strategic thinking with a strong bias toward execution. A day in the life (Responsibilities) • Drive Governance Program Operations: Manage and maintain the Data Domain Model, ensuring clear ownership assignments. Facilitate the Data Governance Council (agendas, action tracking, meeting facilitation), partner with Data Stewards across domains, and track program adoption metrics and maturity KPIs for leadership. • Execute Policy & Compliance Standards: Support the development, documentation, and roll-out of enterprise data policies. Monitor compliance, coordinate remediation with domain owners, maintain the policy register, and assemble governance documentation for audits and risk reviews. • Lead Business Glossary & Metadata Management: Own day-to-day operations of Toast's Business Glossary by facilitating definition workshops and certifying terms with domain owners. Partner with the data catalog team to enforce metadata standards, build onboarding guides, and run regular office hours to drive user adoption. • Advance Data Strategy & Maturity: Support the enterprise data strategy through stakeholder synthesis and executive materials. Coordinate data maturity assessments, synthesize outputs into actionable recommendations, and deliver training programs to raise data literacy across the company. What you'll need to thrive (Requirements) • Experience: 5+ years in data governance, data management, or analytics. Proven track record of supporting or implementing governance programs (stewardship models, policy execution, catalog rollouts) and driving adoption in fast-moving, complex environments. • Familiarity with data governance frameworks (e.g., DAMA DMBOK). • Working knowledge of modern data stack platforms (Snowflake, dbt, cloud data warehouses). • Hands-on experience with data catalog/metadata management tools (e.g., DataHub, Alation, Atlan). • Proficiency in SQL for governance reporting and data quality analysis. • Leadership & Program Management: Exceptional workshop facilitation and consensus-building skills. High degree of organization with a track record of managing multiple workstreams and executing independently. What will help you stand out (Nonessential Skills/Nice to Haves): • Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) certification (or active coursework). • Hands-on experience with data observability tools (e.g., Monte Carlo, Great Expectations). • Familiarity with compliance frameworks (SOC 2, GDPR/CCPA, internal audit) or AI governance/responsible data practices. • Prior experience in B2B SaaS or restaurant technology.
