Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a repair-versus-replace decision you made that turned out to be wrong, and what you learned from it.

honesty about failure and whether they actually use data and feedback loops to refine repairability decisions

Describe a time you had to turn a messy engineering bill of material into something a service organization could actually use in the field.

practical experience converting eBOMs into service-ready structures, a core deliverable of this job

Tell me about a time Product Engineering pushed back on a serviceability requirement you were asking for. How did you resolve it?

ability to influence cross-functional partners without formal authority over them

Tell me about a service parts simplification or standardization project you led. What was the actual dollar or inventory impact?

track record of driving measurable cost and complexity reduction, not just running projects

Tell me about a new product introduction where service readiness was treated as an afterthought. What did you do about it?

whether the person proactively embeds serviceability early in the product lifecycle rather than reacting after launch

Technical

Walk me through how you would build a formal Level of Repair Analysis process from scratch for a product line that doesn't have one today.

whether the candidate can design a rigorous, repeatable LORA methodology rather than relying on ad hoc judgment calls

Say you're setting repairability standards for a generator's power electronics versus its fuel system. How would your approach differ between those two subsystems and why?

depth of hands-on knowledge across varied generator subsystems rather than generic maintainability theory

How do you decide what should be a service kit versus an individually stocked replacement part?

understanding of service parts strategy and its downstream inventory and cost implications

What's your experience with SAP or similar MRP systems, and where have you seen service BOM governance break down inside them?

concrete, specific system experience versus surface familiarity

Walk me through how warranty and reliability data actually feeds into your service engineering decisions.

whether the candidate closes the loop between field data and design or treats service engineering as a one-way process

Have you worked with standards like GEIA-STD-0007 or MIL-STD-1388? Tell me about a situation where a formal standard shaped a decision you made.

real exposure to the specific maintainability standards named in the posting versus passing familiarity

Situational

If a new product is six weeks from launch and the sBOM structure in PLM doesn't match what's in the ERP system, what do you do?

crisis judgment and knowledge of how PLM and ERP data need to reconcile before a launch

How would you handle a service engineer on your team who is technically strong but consistently misses deadlines on LORA deliverables?

people management style, specifically performance management and coaching skills

Describe how you would justify a service engineering headcount or tooling investment to leadership when budgets are tight.

financial acumen and ability to translate engineering needs into business language
