Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you optimized a backend operational schema that was slowing down analytics. What did you change, and how did you prove it worked?

What they are checking: Whether they have done hands-on data architecture work and measured the outcome.

You're the technical interface with the Central Data and Governance teams. Tell me about a time you had to align a local data design with enterprise standards you didn't fully agree with.

What they are checking: Whether they can work inside governance while still pushing back constructively when a standard doesn't fit.

Tell me about a time you led a team through a data platform migration or redesign. What went wrong, and how did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead people through messy technical change and own the problems that come up.

What would you do

You'll work alongside Senior Managers of Business Analysis. How would you split ownership between data strategy and business analysis so nothing falls through the gap?

What they are checking: Whether they can define clear lanes with peers and avoid duplicated or orphaned work.

How do you set a technical roadmap for monitoring when the network team, value-added services and servicing portals all want something different first?

What they are checking: Whether they can prioritize across competing internal customers with a reason everyone can follow.

A dashboard shows a sudden drop in transaction volume for one issuer. How do you figure out whether it's a real business change or a data pipeline problem?

What they are checking: Whether they check data lineage and freshness before raising an alarm about the business.

About the work

The Discover Global Payment Network produces huge volumes of transaction data. How would you design the data model behind a core monitoring framework for network platforms?

What they are checking: Whether they can turn high-volume event streams into reliable analytical assets rather than one-off reports.

How would you build anomaly detection for authorization or settlement volumes when the normal pattern shifts by hour, day and season?

What they are checking: Whether they understand seasonality and baselines well enough to catch real problems without flooding teams with false alarms.

How would you write SQL to find transactions that were authorized but never settled within the expected window?

What they are checking: Whether they can reason about joins, time windows and edge cases in real payment data.

How do you make sure the data definitions behind a monitoring metric stay consistent as different teams start using it?

What they are checking: Whether they think about metadata, definitions and ownership, which is what keeps a metric trustworthy at scale.
