Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about the production Vault environment you have run. How big was it and what were you responsible for day to day?

What they are checking: Whether their Vault experience is hands-on administration in production, which the role requires, rather than light usage.

What have you automated around Vault, and what tools did you use to do it?

What they are checking: Whether they reduce manual work with code, since a bank-wide platform cannot be run by hand.

What would you do

An app team says credential rotation broke their service at 2 a.m. How do you troubleshoot it and keep it from happening again?

What they are checking: Whether they can fix the outage and then design rotation so apps handle new credentials gracefully.

Information security wants a control that app developers say will slow them down. How do you find a path both sides accept?

What they are checking: Whether they can protect the platform without becoming the team everyone tries to route around.

If you joined and found a few apps still pulling secrets from config files, what would your first steps be?

What they are checking: Whether they can drive adoption with a sensible plan rather than forcing a risky big-bang migration.

About the work

Walk me through how you would plan and run a Vault version upgrade on a production cluster with apps depending on it.

What they are checking: Whether they know how to upgrade a critical shared system safely, with backups, ordering and a rollback plan.

Explain the difference between static secrets and dynamic secrets in Vault, and when you would push a team toward dynamic ones.

What they are checking: Whether they understand that short-lived credentials shrink the damage when something leaks.

How would you integrate an application running in Kubernetes with Vault so it never stores a credential in its manifest?

What they are checking: Whether they know practical Kubernetes auth and injection patterns that keep secrets out of code and config.

How do you design Vault policies so each application gets only the paths it needs?

What they are checking: Whether they practice least privilege in a way that still scales across many app teams.

Talk me through what happens when Vault is sealed and how you handle unseal in an enterprise setting.

What they are checking: Whether they understand seal mechanics and auto-unseal, which decide how fast the platform recovers from a restart.

How would you set up monitoring and audit logging for Vault so you would know about a problem before app teams do?

What they are checking: Whether they treat visibility and audit trails as core to a secrets platform in a regulated bank.
